PRINCIPAL, ENGINEERING - ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY

What you will do

Let’s do this! Let’s change the world! This is a position that offers a unique opportunity to participate in the Amgen Inc. Environmental Sustainability (ES) programs. The successful candidate will undertake varied projects assigned to develop, implement, manage, and monitor aspects of the Sustainability program.

Under the direction of the Senior Director, Engineering - Environmental Sustainability, the successful candidate is responsible for leading the Sustainability Engineering Assessment team. The primary function is to manage the team responsible for sustainability and related information management (e.g. utility usage, waste generation and management data, etc.), to ensure enterprise-wide internal client access to data, and to interpret these data to develop meaningful strategy to maintain and advance our sustainability program. The position will drive program implementation necessary to provide transparent reporting to meet external customer expectations as well as drive efficiency and effectiveness of internal program aspects facilitating responsible resource utilization. The successful candidate will contribute to broad sustainability initiatives by working with Amgen business units, site, and functional committees to deliver results through influence and effective communication.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Manage team responsible for sustainability assessments, compile and assure enterprise-wide usage and performance information; provide access and interpretation for various uses by internal clients.

  • Act as Amgen’s GHG Protocol, carbon accounting, and sustainability management subject matter expert.

  • Assess site usage and program performance to reveal underlying information regarding the health and progress toward sustainability related objectives and critical initiatives.

  • Manage supplier engagement initiatives to collect, validate, and enhance sustainability data, driving progress on scope 3 greenhouse gas (GHG) accounting, reporting, and reduction strategies.

  • In partnership with Global Engineering partners and multi-functional teams, support practical program development and management necessitated by emerging expectation and program priority, including support to ES regulations, internal program development and management, as well as voluntary disclosures.

  • Create and manage enterprise performance models to support ES program management as well as the purchase of renewable electricity and high-quality carbon offsets, including the execution of Power Purchase Agreements.

  • Provide insights and progress reports to functions across Amgen, including executive leadership, and externally as needed.

  • Participate in external forums and working groups, representing Amgen as a subject matter expert.

  • Advance integration of sustainability into Amgen’s business and advancing Amgen’s Sustainability Culture.

What we expect of you

Basic Qualifications:

  • Doctorate degree and 2 years of corporate services, engineering, or science experience OR

  • Master’s degree and 4 years of corporate services, engineering, or science experience OR

  • Bachelor’s degree and 6 years of corporate services, engineering, or science experience OR

  • Associate’s degree and 10 years of corporate services, engineering, or science experience OR

  • High school diploma / GED and 12 years of corporate services, engineering, or science experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Degree in Engineering or Science

  • Experience managing teams as well as personnel performance.

  • Passion and interest in environmental sustainability.

  • Strong analytical / quantitative skills with an ability to pragmatically apply scientific / engineering first principles.

  • Demonstrated critical thinking and strategy development/deployment experience.

  • Risk analysis and financial quantification expertise, across different ES and other business topics.

  • Experience or capacity to quickly understand industrial, laboratory, manufacturing, and building environments / technologies.

  • Strong written and oral communication skills, relationship building, and leadership skills; demonstrated strong multi-functional collaboration.

  • Self-starter with the ability to concurrently manage several projects or assignments; highly organized with exceptional project management skills.

  • Experience interpreting local, national and cross-border regulations.

  • Master’s degree in a relevant field.

  • 12 or more years of experience developing and supporting Sustainability programs or other technical programs.

The expected annual salary range for this role in the U.S. (excluding Puerto Rico) is posted. Actual salary will vary based on several factors including but not limited to, relevant skills, experience, and qualifications.
