Sr Data Scientist - Operations Transformation and Digital Strategy

What you will do

In this vital role you will actively contribute to Amgen’s AI-driven transformation efforts, applying your analytical expertise to enhance data-driven decision-making across Operations. The successful candidate will employ innovative AI and machine learning methodologies to extract meaningful insights, optimize operational efficiency, and scale these analytics solutions enterprise-wide. Your quantitative skills and innovative thinking will challenge existing practices, advance automation, promote continuous improvement, and foster digital proficiency within Amgen Operations.

Beyond addressing traditional and big data challenges, this role offers extensive opportunities to engage with cross-functional leaders, understand complex business processes, analyze diverse datasets, and deliver strategic recommendations to senior management.

  • Lead and support analytics projects end-to-end: establishing relationships with key stakeholders, collecting and interpreting data, and effectively summarizing and communicating actionable insights to inform strategic decisions.
  • Apply advanced analytics tools and methodologies, ensuring rigorous scientific standards to deliver high-quality insights.
  • Collaborate in designing and implementing a variety of innovative analytics solutions, ranging from descriptive analytics to sophisticated machine learning models and real-time visualization dashboards using Big Data platforms.
  • Engage closely with business leaders and subject matter experts to define success metrics, refine analytics solutions, and optimize operational outcomes.
  • Partner with business and Information Systems (IS) teams to promote data management best practices and support successful implementation efforts.
  • Develop clear, persuasive business cases and strategic recommendations based on analytical findings.
  • Interface with various finance teams, including Functional FP&A, to assess impacts on budgeting and long-range planning.
  • Prepare executive-level communications, presenting analyses and strategic insights to Amgen’s senior leadership.
  • Conduct ad hoc analyses and support special initiatives as required.

What we expect of you

We are all different, yet we all use our unique contributions to serve patients. The analytical professional we seek is a Data Scientist with these qualifications.

Basic Qualifications:

  • High school diploma / GED and 10 years of Data Sciences experience; Or
  • Associate’s degree and 8 years of Data Sciences experience; Or
  • Bachelor’s degree and 4 years of Data Sciences experience; Or
  • Master’s degree and 2 years of Data Sciences experience; OR
  • Doctorate degree

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Data Science, Business Analytics, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Engineering, Computer Science, or a related quantitative field with at least 1 year of relevant experience developing advanced analytics algorithms, preferably in Operations (experience in BioPharma Operations strongly preferred).
  • Solid understanding of Operations domains, such as Supply Chain, Manufacturing, and Engineering.
  • Experience with data modeling techniques including star/snowflake schemas, normalized/denormalized forms, and medallion architecture.
  • Proven ability to manage and harmonize large, complex, unstructured datasets.
  • Familiarity with Databricks or similar analytics platforms.
  • Proficiency in advanced Python analytics packages such as Pandas, PySpark, Plotly, and scikit-learn.
  • Demonstrated experience extracting, processing, filtering, and presenting data from large-scale data warehouses, data lakes, or directly from source systems.
  • Competence with data visualization tools like Tableau or Spotfire.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, capable of clearly articulating complex analyses to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Experience mentoring junior data scientists and engineers.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities, comfortable navigating ambiguous situations and managing multiple concurrent projects.
  • Energetic, detail-oriented, proactive, and driven to achieve results with a positive and collaborative attitude.

The expected annual salary range for this role in the U.S. (excluding Puerto Rico) is posted. Actual salary will vary based on several factors including but not limited to, relevant skills, experience, and qualifications.
