Environment, Health & Safety Manager

What you will do

Let’s do this. Let’s change the world. In this vital role you will have responsibility for supporting various programs that support our EHS Management system. As a core member of the site EHS team, the candidate will be expected to interact frequently with internal clients, be action oriented, and be directly engaged in the operations of the facility. In addition to broad support of EHS Programs and site Clients, this role will be directly responsible for managing our site EHS Engineering Design, Change Management and New Prodcut Introduction programs and processes. This will require strong partnership and engagement with the broader EHS, Engineering and Manufacturing organizations. The successful candidate will have great opportunities to make their mark establishing world class programs and opportunities to grow across all areas of EHS.

Primary Responsibilities:

This position offers the opportunity provide EHS Client Support to site functions, lead the EHS Programs and processes centered around safe site changes, and support various other EHS programs at Amgen Rhode Island.

Key EHS Program Responsibilities:

  • Ensure review of all new or proposed changes to processes, process equipment, materials or operations to determine all necessary EHS requirements are addressed in a thorough and rigorous manner

  • Ensure robust EHS Safety Engineering Reviews are conducted for all projects as they progress through Concept, Basis of Design, Detailed Design and other project stages

  • Partner with Manufacturing, Process Development, Engineering and Supply Chain to deliver safe New Product Introductions.

  • Review and provide EHS input on typical project documents including process diagrams, P&ID’s, equipment specifications, design drawings etc.

  • Interprets, applies, and enforces compliance with Federal, State, and local requirements

  • Integrates identified trends, data and information into overall program plans, deliverables and recommendations based on data

  • Act as the site subject matter expert for job assigned programs

Client Support:

  • Partner with clients to advance safety culture and manage EHS risks

  • Analyze metrics and establish annual action plans to drive continuous improvement.

  • Establish and complete risk assessment plans for clients to ensure all risks are addressed and control systems are implemented and maintained

  • Ensure all hazards are identified and risks are proactively assessed

  • Establish safe work procedures for hazardous work

  • Conduct regular inspections of the work areas

  • Monitor incident trends and conduct incident investigations to implement robust corrective actions to prevent future incidents and injuries

  • Conduct regular EHS management reviews with Client Leadership

Basic Qualifications:

  • High school diploma / GED and 10 years of Environmental Health, Safety and Sustainability experience OR

  • Associate degree and 8 years of Environmental Health, Safety and Sustainability experience OR

  • Bachelor’s degree or and 4 years of Environmental Health, Safety and Sustainability experience OR

  • Master’s degree and 2 years of Environmental Health, Safety and Sustainability experience OR

  • Doctorate degree

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong understanding of design and project engineering experience

  • Strong understanding of risk assessment processes

  • Knowledge with regulations as they pertain to pharma/ biotech operations

  • Knowledge of key EHSS programs including but not limited to, Machine Safety, Lock Out/Tag Out, Electrical Safety, Process Safety Management, Pressure Safety, etc.

  • Applied knowledge and understanding of EHS principles and practices, regulatory standards, and requirements in context of business activities.

  • Good communication skills, self-starting, program development and project management.

  • Good mechanical competence, ability and willingness to perform hands-on work

  • Strong verbal & written communication skills, ability to communicate within departments, with scientists, engineers, and managers

  • Strong leadership skills in order to influence leadership, and other collaborators to achieve the highest safety engineering standards across the network

  • Ability to partner with and effectively influence staff and management

  • Process driven with a strong Operational Excellence mentality

  • Program development and project management experience

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and other computer software systems

The expected annual salary range for this role in the U.S. (excluding Puerto Rico) is posted. Actual salary will vary based on several factors including but not limited to, relevant skills, experience, and qualifications.
