What you will do

In this vital role you will support the Finance Transformation and Amgen leadership by using advanced analytics and strategic thinking to characterize business performance across the enterprise, evaluate potential transformation opportunities, and enable step change in business outcomes. The role will support the design and development of financial and workforce analytical capabilities to measure and improve enterprise business performance and provide insights for top priority persistent business questions. Ultimately, this role will support data-driven decision making, building a foundational capability to provide end-to-end insight into business process performance and improvements. We are seeking a Data Scientist who will apply innovative quantitative tools, including but not limited to: AI/ML based modeling and analytics, multivariate statistical and empirical modeling, data warehousing and data automation / tooling of complex data workflows. A successful candidate is expected to have advanced skills in modern data architecture, data modeling and data visualization, as well as a working understanding of finance, procurement and human resources.
The Data Scientist will collaborate with other data scientists, business SMEs, and Technology professionals to develop workflows and infrastructure to enable development of baselining and long range financial planning tools, business cases and value capture modeling, and connecting the gamut of cross functional and finance data for ongoing transformation.
This role will interact with a wide range of cross-functional business partners at all levels to understand processes, analyze data, and articulate comprehensive value delivery (cost, speed, risk, quality, etc.)
Objectives of this Role
- Support design, build and maintenance of a groundbreaking capability to analyze financial and non-financial information across the enterprise to derive critical business insights for enterprise transformation and opportunity identification
- Support the buildout of a sustainable platform for workforce transformation, which connects several domains of data to enable better decision making around our capabilities, finances and workforce
- Develop and maintain financial and non-financial baseline for programs and initiatives, identifying trends and opportunities for transformation by analyzing complex data sets
- Create a robust management reporting capability based on data mining, analysis, and visualization
- Analyze data to answer key questions from senior leaders with an eye for what drives business performance, investigating and communicating opportunities of comprehensive value delivery
- Requires independent leadership (will lead cadence, decisions, dependencies, and accountability for a defined pod), executive-facing, data judgment, and end-to-end ownership of complex work
- Independent thinking, shape priorities, discuss data, risks, and tradeoffs directly with senior leaders.
Job Responsibilities:
- Work closely with business and initiative leadership to define data sources and transformation needed to develop a platform for workforce transformation
- Develop technology and workforce business cases for new opportunities
- Manage the development and maintenance of data models and analytical toolsets (e.g., Anaplan, Power suite, Codex) required to deliver insights at scale
- Own and lead cross functional analytics projects from beginning to end, from building relationships with key business leaders to collecting and analyzing data, as well as summarizing and presenting key insights in support of decision making
- Influence transformative thinking and decisions with analytical insights and an ability to build collaborative relationships
- Partner with business areas to share data standard methodologies and support implementation
- Assist in developing business cases and strategic recommendations, perform ad hoc analyses, and support special projects
- Interact with various finance and resource planning groups across Amgen to understand impact to budget/long range plans
- Develop executive communications and present analysis and insights to Amgen’s senior leadership
- Converts ambiguous asks into scoped workstreams, anticipates risks and pull the right partners in early, and operate with enough independence to create momentum

Basic Qualifications:
Doctorate degree
Or
Master’s degree and 2 years of data science, business, statistics, data mining, applied mathematics, business analytics, engineering, computer science or related field experience
Or
Bachelor’s degree and 4 years of data science, business, statistics, data mining, applied mathematics, business analytics, engineering, computer science or related field experience
Or
Associates degree and 9 years of data science, business, statistics, data mining, applied mathematics, business analytics, engineering, computer science or related field experience
Or
High school diploma / GED and 9 years of data science, business, statistics, data mining, applied mathematics, business analytics, engineering, computer science or related field experience
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in data science, data engineering, business, statistics, data mining, applied mathematics, business analytics, engineering, computer science or related field and 4 years of relevant experience in data science, data analytics, consulting (MBA Preferred)
- Proficiency in coding (R, Python, SQL), data libraries such as Numpy and Pandas and other industry standard AI/ML toolsets
- Experience with statistical / mathematical modeling, ability to work with structured and unstructured data sets, and harmonize complex data and information
- Experience processing, transforming filtering, and presenting large quantities of data extracted directly from the source systems
- Experience with automating data workflows to pull, filter, modify and transform data to then analyze and visualize
- Experience with developing / overseeing development of analytical dashboards using a variety of tools/packages, e.g. Tableau, Python, R, Alteryx, Powerapps, UI Path etc.
- Experience setting up reporting layers, maintenance & use of reporting tools
- Understanding of / experience in the Bio-Pharmaceutical industry
- Critical thinking: Ability to tackle complex and ambiguous problems, provide clarity of thought, and deliver results
- Teamwork: Builds strong relationships across the network, can effectively collaborate with cross functional teams and a diverse set of partners
- Comfortable in "start-up" environment of a newly created Amgen group whose remit is to build a durable and data driven transformation capability

The expected annual salary range for this role in the U.S. (excluding Puerto Rico) is posted. Actual salary will vary based on several factors including but not limited to, relevant skills, experience, and qualifications.
