Associate Director, Strategic Projects – Procurement Center of Excellence

What you will do

Let’s do this. Let’s change the world. We are seeking a seasoned and strategic leader to serve as Associate Director, Strategic Projects within the Procurement Center of Excellence (COE). This high-impact role requires a forward-thinking leader with the ability to influence across a global matrix, drive organizational transformation, and deliver against ambitious procurement and enterprise goals.

As a key member of the COE Procurement leadership team, you will report to the Senior Director of Functional Strategy & Transformation, spearheading the design, implementation, and execution of high-priority strategic projects and programs that align with Amgen’s Procurement and enterprise-level strategies. You will lead cross-functional teams and serve as a critical liaison between Global Procurement and business unit leadership, ensuring successful delivery of initiatives that drive value, innovation, and operational excellence.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead Functional and Enterprise-Level Strategic Initiatives: Own the execution of complex, cross-functional critical initiatives that have high visibility and material impact on Procurement and enterprise performance.
  • Shape Functional Strategy: Partner with senior leaders to build and translate long-range functional strategies into multi-year implementation roadmaps.
  • Establish Program Governance and Operating Models: Define and implement consistent frameworks for strategic project management, performance monitoring, change management, and partner engagement.
  • Strategic Analytics and Insight Generation: Design a standard portfolio of critical metric dashboards and analytics to inform executive decision-making and identify risk and opportunity across the strategic project portfolio.
  • Executive-Level Communication: Deliver compelling, data-driven updates to senior partners and steering committees, including C-level executives.
  • Global Stakeholder Leadership: Act as the primary contact for regional and global Procurement partners, ensuring alignment and integration across markets.
  • Resource Planning and Portfolio Management: Optimize allocation of resources across strategic programs, ensuring efficient delivery against defined objectives, timelines, and return on investment.
  • Continuous Improvement and Innovation: Identify and scale enterprise standard processes in Procurement operations, policies, and digital enablement tools.

Basic Qualifications:

Doctorate degree and 3 years of experience in strategic project leadership, acquisition integration execution, or procurement strategy, preferably in a global, matrixed organization

Or

Master’s degree and 5 years of experience in strategic project leadership, acquisition integration execution, or procurement strategy, preferably in a global, matrixed organization

Or

Bachelor’s degree and 7 years of experience in strategic project leadership, acquisition integration execution, or procurement strategy, preferably in a global, matrixed organization

Or

Associate’s degree and 12 years of experience in strategic project leadership, acquisition integration execution, or procurement strategy, preferably in a global, matrixed organization

Or

High school diploma / GED and 14 years of experience in strategic project leadership, acquisition integration execution, or procurement strategy, preferably in a global, matrixed organization

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of experience in strategic project leadership, acquisition integration execution, or procurement strategy, preferably in a global, matrixed organization.
  • 5+ years of experience in cross-functional team leadership with demonstrated success driving enterprise impact.
  • 2+ years of people management or team leadership experience
  • Deep expertise in Procurement operating models and global sourcing practices.
  • Outstanding ability to lead high-stakes conversations, drive alignment, and influence without authority across executive and functional boundaries.
  • Advanced proficiency in project portfolio management and strategic planning tools.
  • Advanced knowledge of visualization and analytics tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI).
  • Hands-on experience with global sourcing and contract lifecycle platforms (e.g., Ariba, Workday Strategic Sourcing, Sirion Labs).
  • Familiarity with digital transformation enablers in Procurement.
  • Executive presence with strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Transformational thinker capable of connecting strategy to execution
  • Skilled at navigating ambiguity and leading through change
  • Adept at partner management across geographies and cultures
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple enterprise priorities simultaneously
  • Passion for continuous improvement, innovation, and enabling business outcomes

The expected annual salary range for this role in the U.S. (excluding Puerto Rico) is posted. Actual salary will vary based on several factors including but not limited to, relevant skills, experience, and qualifications.
