Strategic Planning and Operations Senior Manager

What you will do

At Amgen, we are transforming drug discovery with a bold mission: “Any Target, Every Time.” In this high-impact role, you will serve as a strategic and operational leader across two critical areas—Cardiometabolic Therapeutic Area (TA). You will partner directly with the Cardiometabolic Disorders VP and senior leaders to drive strategy execution, optimize operations, and strengthen cross-functional collaboration. This position blends scientific insight, operational excellence, and cross-functional leadership to accelerate transformative therapies to patients worldwide.

Key Responsibilities:

Strategic Leadership & Operational Execution

  • Partner with the Cardiometabolic Disorders TA head and senior leadership team to execute business strategy and high-priority initiatives across portfolios.
  • Coordinate strategic planning, goal-setting, governance oversight, and resource optimization to ensure alignment with organizational goals.
  • Lead key planning and tracking efforts, including budgeting, headcount management, and performance metrics.
  • Support portfolio and program reviews, enabling data-driven decision-making through insights and analytics.

Cross-Functional Program Management

  • Manage and execute cross-functional initiatives that span research, operations, and therapeutic areas.
  • Lead or contribute to special projects, ideation efforts, innovation pilots, and strategic planning forums.
  • Facilitate cross-site coordination for initiatives spanning global research teams.
  • Act as a liaison between senior leaders and operational teams, ensuring alignment, progress, and accountability.

Communications & Culture Building

  • Prepare executive-level presentations, strategy documents, and communications for leadership meetings, governance reviews, and all-staff forums.
  • Support internal communications, presentations and planning for initiatives including team-building events, guest lecture series, All-Staff meetings and external engagements.
  • Help drive a cohesive, inclusive team culture through DE&I activities, staff recognition, and innovation initiatives.

Financial & Resource Management

  • Oversee functional budgets and resource planning processes, working with Finance, HR, and Research Operations.
  • Ensure efficient use of resources across teams and optimize operational workflows.

Compliance & Organizational Effectiveness

  • Represent business functions on compliance and governance committees.
  • Develop and implement SOPs, training programs, and risk mitigation plans to improve operational consistency and ensure regulatory alignment.
  • Support change management and long-range strategic planning to enhance organizational agility and effectiveness.

Basic Qualifications:

Doctorate degree in Life Sciences, Business or other relevant field and 2 years of project management experience

Or

Master’s degree in Life Sciences, Business or other relevant field and 4 years of project management experience

Or

Bachelor’s degree in Life Sciences, Business or other relevant field and 6 years of project management experience

Or

Associate’s degree in Life Sciences, Business or other relevant field and 10 years of project management experience

Or

High school diploma / GED and 12 years of project management experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD, Master's degree or MBA
  • Experience in strategic planning, operations, and budgeting in a Research and Development organization
  • Deep understanding of disease mechanisms and the drug development process, preferably in cardiometabolic disease
  • Strong project management experience in life sciences/biopharmaceutical industry
  • Demonstrated experience supporting research (non-clinical) partnership activities
  • Experience working in a global, matrix organization
  • Operational excellence: management skills, planning, organization, prioritization, decision making, objective setting, meeting management and plan execution
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to clearly and concisely communicate at all levels of the organization
  • Creative and critical problem solving, a strong strategic thinker
  • Builds strong relationships; networking skills
  • Highly effective at leading and influencing through cross-functional teams and highly matrixed environment
  • Flexibility amidst rapidly changing environment; high tolerance to ambiguity

  • High proficiency in Microsoft Office, ChatGPT, Gemini, and analytics tools
  • Proven ability to build relationships, influence cross-functional stakeholders, and drive outcomes across levels
  • Familiarity with Amgen’s commercialization and governance processes a plus

The expected annual salary range for this role in the U.S. (excluding Puerto Rico) is posted. Actual salary will vary based on several factors including but not limited to, relevant skills, experience, and qualifications.
