Strategic Planning & Operations Manager

What you will do

Let’s do this. Let’s change the world. In this vital role you will be a member of the Engineering Strategic Planning & Operations (SPO) team. SPO is a selection of business, advisory, and risk experts who elevate Engineering’s impact and performance by using a broad set of skills - both strategic and technical - to guide leadership, implement priority efforts, manage risk posture, and advance the organization’s culture, communication, and careers. We operate as the internal management consulting arm of Global Engineering to enable strategic objectives and deliver business results. Engineering plans, designs, operates and maintains Amgen's global infrastructure through managing ~$2B in capital projects annually. Additionally, we own Environmental Health and Safety as well as Amgen's Sustainability program which strives to be carbon neutral by 2027. The SPO team handles the Strategies, Financials, Business Performance, OE, Risk, Compliance, Transformation and Career Development for the department which consists of the following functions:

  • Engineering Technical Authority
  • Global Capital Project Management
  • Project Controls and Strategy
  • Engineering Operations and Services
  • Environmental Health, Safety, Sustainability
  • Strategic Planning & Operations

Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Primary responsibility to identify and mitigate risk to Amgen’s operations in two key areas: Physical Risks via management of our Property Loss Prevention program in partnership with our Business Resiliency and Corporate Insurance (Treasury) team as well as Financial Controls
  • Understand and support mitigating risk by designing and implementing processes that ensure compliance (SOX) through leading financial audit / inspection readiness and response, insurance renewal, and Operations Network Risk Assessment
  • Serve as the point of contact for partner correspondence and Engineering representation during annual insurance renewals
  • Correspond with internal and external partners, auditors, lead audit prep discussions, identify gaps in processes, and work with business process owners to resolve
  • Strong command of technical applications/tools to support analysis and the development of digital optimization and automation of processes or solutions
  • Analysis: leverage data and a consistent process to assess needs, develop options, make recommendations on next steps, and flex to implement when appropriate. Including preparing and delivering executive level presentations that drive decision making at the highest levels of Engineering and Operations
  • Lead cross functional teams to maintain a compliant network, completion of key workstreams and deliverables, resolve issues, and share standard processes
  • Strategy: Support/Lead the development and implementation of strategy, transformation, innovation, operational excellence and continuous improvement efforts across all aspects of Engineering; including technologies, processes, and people
  • Act as the central hub for cross-functional communication and planning efforts to ensure connection and integration across all of Engineering (and beyond) for various initiatives and projects.

What we expect of you

Basic Qualifications:

  • High school diploma / GED and 10 years of business analysis, strategy, risk, or compliance experience; OR
  • Associate’s degree and 8 years of business analysis, strategy, risk, or compliance experience; Or
  • Bachelor’s degree and 4 years of business analysis, strategy, risk, or compliance experience; Or
  • Master’s degree and 2 years of business analysis, strategy, risk, or compliance experience; Or
  • Doctorate degree

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong background in risk management, business resiliency, and compliance
  • Prior audit experience in Corporate Audit at a Fortune 500 or Big 4
  • Prior experience in Biotech industry and or Capital Projects
  • Educational background in Accounting, Finance with MBA and / or CPA
  • Strong executive presence, technical, and business acumen to drive strategy, decision making, and implementation
  • Comfortable owning and resolving complex challenges, independent problem solving, and raising as appropriate to senior leaders

The expected annual salary range for this role in the U.S. (excluding Puerto Rico) is posted. Actual salary will vary based on several factors including but not limited to, relevant skills, experience, and qualifications.
