What you will do

Amgen is seeking an experienced and highly motivated Senior Principal Scientist – Non-Regulated Immunoassay Leader to join the PKDM organization at our Thousand Oaks, California site. This scientific leadership role will provide strategic, operational, and hands-on laboratory leadership for non-regulated immunoassay activities supporting biologics programs across a diverse therapeutic portfolio.

The successful candidate will serve as a technical leader with deep expertise in immunoassay development, qualification/validation, and bioanalysis across multiple assay platforms. This individual will lead laboratory activities, drive scientific innovation, mentor scientists, and collaborate cross-functionally to deliver high-quality bioanalytical data supporting soluble target protein measurements and pharmacokinetic assessments.

This role requires a strong balance of scientific leadership, operational excellence, strategic thinking, and hands-on laboratory engagement in a dynamic matrixed environment.

Responsibilities include:

  • Lead scientific strategy and execution for non-regulated immunoassay development and bioanalysis activities supporting pharmacokinetic and soluble target protein measurements.
  • Provide technical leadership across a range of immunoassay platforms including ELISA, MSD/ECL, Gyrolab, Quanterix, AlphaLISA, and emerging technologies.
  • Design, develop, optimize, qualify, and validate immunoassays supporting biologics research and development.
  • Oversee sample analysis activities to ensure delivery of high-quality, scientifically rigorous data within established timelines.
  • Drive operational excellence within the laboratory including workflow management, prioritization, troubleshooting, laboratory planning, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Serve as a scientific subject matter expert for immunoassay technologies and bioanalytical strategies.
  • Collaborate closely with Discovery Research, Precision Medicine, Translational Safety and Risk Sciences, and cross-functional program teams.
  • Interpret complex scientific data and communicate results effectively to multidisciplinary stakeholders and senior leadership.
  • Mentor and develop scientific staff while fostering a collaborative and innovative scientific environment.
  • Evaluate and implement new technologies to expand laboratory capabilities and improve assay performance.
  • Maintain accurate scientific documentation and ensure adherence to internal standards and best scientific practices.

What we expect of you

Basic Qualifications:

Doctorate degree [and relevant post-doc where applicable] and 3 years of scientific experience

OR

Master’s degree and 6 years of scientific experience

OR

Bachelor’s degree and 8 years of scientific experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD in Immunology, Biochemistry, Bioanalytical Sciences, Pharmaceutical Sciences, or related scientific discipline
  • 5–10 years of relevant industry experience in immunoassay development and bioanalysis
  • Demonstrated expertise in development, qualification/validation, and sample analysis for non-regulated immunoassays
  • Strong hands-on experience across multiple immunoassay platforms and detection technologies
  • Proven ability to independently lead complex scientific programs and solve technical challenges
  • Experience leading laboratory operations and managing competing priorities in a matrixed environment
  • Prior people management or supervisory experience preferred
  • Strong understanding of bioanalytical strategies supporting biologics programs
  • Excellent scientific communication, presentation, and technical writing skills
  • Demonstrated ability to influence cross-functional teams and drive scientific strategy
  • Passion for mentoring scientists and fostering technical development

The expected annual salary range for this role in the U.S. (excluding Puerto Rico) is posted. Actual salary will vary based on several factors including but not limited to, relevant skills, experience, and qualifications.
