Principal Engineer- Thermal Engineering

The Principal Engineer position is part of the Thermal Engineering group under Combination Product Operations at Amgen. This role requires the application of diverse and advanced engineering, scientific principles as well as excellent communication skills to enable cold chain transportation operations within the Amgen Supply Chain network.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will actively participate in cross-functional teams to qualify shipping solutions that meet Amgen’s expanding business needs, serving as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) addressing and resolving technical issues or challenges related to Cold Chain solutions. This position requires the application of engineering and project management principles to develop and qualify thermal packaging systems in accordance with GDP and GMP procedures.

Responsibilities include leading the qualification of thermal shipping systems, performing technical assessments and studies, and writing technical reports, manuals, specifications, SOPs, and bill-of-materials with minimal supervision. Additionally, the individual will manage collaborative relationships with internal customers and external partners, ensuring effective communication with all stakeholders. This role also involves organizing and managing the databases owned by Thermal Engineering, overseeing the shipper project request process, supporting the operation of a unique transportation simulation testing lab and expertly communicating progress to key partners in a timely manner.

This position may include domestic and international travel on an as-needed basis.

Basic Qualifications:

  • High school diploma / GED and 12 years of Engineering experience OR

  • Associate’s degree and 10 years of Engineering experience OR

  • Bachelor’s degree and 6 years of Engineering experience OR

  • Master’s degree and 4 years of Engineering experience OR

  • Doctorate degree and 2 years of Engineering experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry or industries that support the pharmaceutical supply chain

  • Demonstrated accomplishments in manufacturing or supply-chain areas with strong fundamental knowledge of thermal packaging systems, packaging engineering, material science, and/or transportation-quality systems

  • Experience in conducting technical assessments with service providers on reusable shipping solutions, ensuring compliance and alignment with corporate sustainability goals

  • Ability to communicate and work with a range of technically and culturally diverse people, influence them to execute for a common goal, and deliver value-added results that meet high-quality requirements within a tight schedule

  • Experience in communications/presentations, organizational and technical skills in issue resolution, and a high degree of emotional intelligence

  • Ability to successfully manage rapidly changing priorities in a very dynamic environment

  • Experience in project management and FDA type Quality Management Systems

  • Ability to lead projects independently and take ownership and accountability of assigned tasks

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, along with a demonstrated ability to work in a team environment

  • Familiarity with the following programs/software: SAP Arriba, Trackwise, Minitab, MS Office (Visio, Excel, Word, PPT), CDOCS, SharePoint, Smartsheet, etc.

  • Experience in thermal simulation and modeling software (ANSYS, SmartCAE) is a plus

The expected annual salary range for this role in the U.S. (excluding Puerto Rico) is posted. Actual salary will vary based on several factors including but not limited to, relevant skills, experience, and qualifications.
