What you will do

Let’s do this. Let’s change the world. In this vital role as Executive Director, Corporate Affairs, U.S. Portfolio Communications, you will be responsible for supporting U.S. Business Operations. This role will report directly to the Associate Vice President, Corporate Affairs, Global Commercial Operations (GCO), with dotted line reporting to the Senior Vice President and General Manager of the U.S. Business Organization (USBO).  and will be Corporate Affairs Extended Leadership Team responsible for shaping and leading the corporate affairs capability at Amgen. This position will be responsible for overseeing U.S. product communications, spanning therapeutic areas including Oncology, Inflammation, Bone Health, and Cardiovascular Disease. This role will also oversee strategic communications for USBO, including external thought leadership and employee engagement.

The preferred candidate will be based in California.

Key responsibilities:

  • Develop and execute integrated product communications strategies across Amgen’s U.S. portfolio, ensuring alignment with business objectives across multiple business units

  • Collaborate with colleagues across functions and teams, including Commercial, Medical, Regulatory, Legal, Policy Communications, R&D and Advocacy Relations

  • Serve as a trusted strategic communications advisor to senior leaders

  • Develop and track key performance metrics to measure the effectiveness of communication initiatives, ensuring continuous improvement and optimization

  • Ensure compliance with industry regulations and corporate standards, proactively identifying and mitigating communication risks

  • Lead USBO employee engagement including townhalls, memos, newsletters, executive thought leadership through media and social media and other events

  • Foster strong cross-functional collaboration with teams including Commercial, Medical, Regulatory, Legal, and Public Affairs to ensure seamless integration of messaging and strategy

  • Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing team, fostering a culture of innovation, accountability, and excellence in communications

  • Understand and advance the use of innovative technologies

  • Manage external PR agency partnerships, ensuring efficient execution of strategic priorities and measurable business impact

Basic Qualifications:

  • Doctorate degree & 6 years of Corporate Affairs experience OR

  • Master’s degree & 10 years of Corporate Affairs experience OR

  • Bachelor’s degree & 12 years of Corporate Affairs experience AND

  • 6 years of managerial experience directly managing people and/or leadership experience leading teams, projects, programs or directing the allocation of resources

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 15 or more years of communications experience with deep understanding of the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry, including substantial experience working in product communications

  • Business acumen and ability to engage with senior leaders across departments

  • Technical expertise within a highly regulated industry

  • Ability to create business impact through communications

  • Experience in issues management, ensuring proactive risk mitigation and reputation protection

  • Leadership in a matrixed organization

  • Media relations and digital communications expertise

  • Storytelling, writing and messaging skills, with the ability to translate complex information into compelling narratives

  • Strategic and creative thinker, comfortable navigating ambiguity and developing innovative solutions to communication challenges

  • Ability to operate in a dynamic, fast-paced environment, balancing multiple priorities while driving measurable impact
