What you will do

In this vital role the Executive Director, Customer Analytics is responsible for building and leading a highly analytical team who leverage critical thinking skills to problem-solve and uncover actionable insights that enable Amgen brands to serve more patients. The individual will oversee secondary and subnational analytics, including strategic targeting, specialty pharmacy/PSP analytics, and reporting across the entire Amgen US organization. This position reports to the VP of Customer Data & Analytics and is a key member of the Customer Data and Analytics (CD&A) leadership team. This executive must be a relentless champion of insights-driven strategy, objective, evidence-based decision making, transparency, and continuous innovation.  In order to be successful in this role the individual must be able to not only manage a large team and number of brands, but must also be skilled at influencing, networking, and navigating a complex internal set of teams and functional groups. The Executive Director is expected to successfully coach the team to employ the best practices, challenge the status quo, and streamline processes where possible to drive efficiency.  At the core of any successful leader is a high performing team built upon trust, mutual respect, diversity, and the unrelenting desire for continuous improvement.  Additionally, the ability to foster an environment of cooperation with Marketing, Finance, Forecasting, Manufacturing, Market Research, and Pricing/Access is critical. This position will partner closely with senior business leaders to identify key strategic questions and will lead their team with a laser focus on driving maximum business impact. He or she will push for excellence in analytics, encouraging teams to leverage the highest-caliber current and emerging methodologies to generate high-value, actionable insights.

Responsibilities include:

  • Lead teams of secondary analysts to deliver actionable insights for the Amgen US portfolio

  • Partners with senior business leaders to understand and influence strategic imperatives related to secondary/subnational research and analytics, function as a thought partner and encourage evidence-based decision making, challenging leadership when necessary

  • Serve as advisor to US leadership by providing unbiased recommendations and trade-off considerations

  • Align team members, and allocate resources to reflect business imperatives, with emphasis on productivity and efficiency; Develop clear action plans tied to business priorities and gain alignment across the organization

  • Instill, and reflect, a strong commitment to quality and standards – both in the underlying analytical frameworks and presentations. Ensures final products are well vetted and reliable

  • Ensure analytics teams have a deep understanding of the business, including the therapeutic area and market dynamics

  • Thought leadership ensuring broad adoption of best practices and incorporating new methods and tools as appropriate

  • Exhibit expertise in solving a variety of structured and unstructured problems through relevant analytical approaches and frameworks

  • Encourage best practice sharing for analytics across Amgen’s entire portfolio

  • Help build analytics as a competitive advantage, including developing team members and creating clear career paths

  • Lead strategic special projects that help shape and drive the direction of the organization

  • Collaborate effectively across the organization with cross-functional partners, and take an enterprise mindset to deliver the highest value impact

  • Deliver effective and efficient reporting solutions for the field, brand, and other parts of the organization

Basic Qualifications:

  • Doctorate degree and 6 years of experience in successfully applied analytics in the biotech/pharmaceutical industry OR

  • Master’s degree and 10 years of experience in successfully applied analytics in the biotech/pharmaceutical industry OR

  • Bachelor’s degree and 12 years of experience in successfully applied analytics in the biotech/pharmaceutical industry AND

  • 6 years of managerial experience directly managing people and/or leadership experience leading teams, brands, projects, programs or directing the allocation of resources

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Executive presence by which one can quickly establish credibility with and influence SVP and EVP level staff

  • Leadership experience in building and developing high performing teams, delivering results, and shaping the future

  • Ability to think strategically about issues impacting an entire portfolio of therapeutics across geographies and stages of development

  • Experience managing multiple senior stakeholders, prioritizing across a multitude of responsibilities, and allocating resources to drive maximum impact

  • Business acumen that lends itself to understanding the context and dynamics of pharmaceutical markets

  • Partners with business leaders to deliver high-quality predictions that guide strategic decision-making

  • Oral, written and presentation skills to explain complex concepts and controversial findings clearly to a variety of audiences, including senior management

  • Knowledge of analytics approaches in biopharma including descriptive and predictive analytics

  • Identify how shifts in customer or competitor behavior may impact tactics and brand performance

  • Experience in managing outside analytics vendors

  • Align teams to best practices and champion new innovative methodologies and analytics modalities
