Scientific Director - Oncology Research
What you will do
Let’s do this. Let’s change the world. Amgen Oncology is advancing an innovative pipeline of first- and best-in-class therapeutics that aim to transform the cancer treatment landscape. We are seeking a Scientific Director to establish and lead discovery research initially focused on tumor somatic genetics and DNA amplification as relates to large molecule drug development.
In this vital role, the Scientific Director will work closely with Oncology senior leadership to set the strategy, establish and lead activities that expand and complement our current research capabilities. The candidate will contribute to collaborations within Amgen (e.g., Amgen deCODE Genetics). The candidate will also be responsible as part of a cross-functional team to identify and establish external partnerships and ensure productive collaboration.
The Scientific Director will be closely involved in the identification and assessment of internal and external opportunities for biology and technology advancement to support this strategy. A deep understanding of cancer cell biology and human genetics, broad knowledge of oncology, and experience with the discovery and development of large molecule therapeutics is required. This is a high visibility role.

- Work as part of a cross-functional team to identify strategic opportunities to build the portfolio
- Establish and lead external partnerships (academic and/or industry) and build external presence
- Present strategy and collaboration updates to senior leadership
- Demonstrate critical thinking and efficient decision-making

Basic Qualifications:
Doctorate degree and 4 years of directly related scientific experience
Or
Master’s degree and 8 years of directly related scientific experience
Or
Bachelor’s degree and 10 years of directly related scientific experience
In addition to meeting at least one of the above requirements, you must have at least 4 years experience directly managing people and/or leadership experience leading teams, projects, programs, or directing the allocation or resources. Your managerial experience may run concurrently with the required technical experience referenced above
Preferred Qualifications:
- PhD or MD/PhD with over 12 years of experience following postdoctoral training
- Expertise with human genetics and molecular biology, including mechanisms and consequences of chromosome amplification
- Experience with large molecule drug discovery and development through early clinical studies
- Proven track record of establishing productive research collaborations resulting in high-impact publications and/or therapeutic program advancement
- Ability to manage a cross-functional team including across different countries.

The expected annual salary range for this role in the U.S. (excluding Puerto Rico) is posted. Actual salary will vary based on several factors including but not limited to, relevant skills, experience, and qualifications.
