IS Data Center Operations Engineer

What you will do

Let’s do this. Let’s change the world. In this vital role you will be bridging Information Technology (IT) and the Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP) systems that power and cool Amgen’s data centers. This role ensures operational continuity and reliability by aligning IT infrastructure with the underlying facility systems. While not responsible for performing electrical or mechanical trade work, the engineer must understand electrical distribution, cooling, and plumbing systems well enough to interpret diagrams and engage effectively with facilities and vendor partners.

This role demands hands-on expertise with enterprise infrastructure (rack and stack, structured cabling, server, storage, and networking platforms), coupled with strong analytical skills and customer service orientation. The ideal candidate will bring experience in enterprise infrastructure cabling—including Outside Plant (OSP) fiber, CAT6A standards, and campus patching standards—along with awareness of AI-enabled tools that support monitoring, automation, and predictive analytics for optimized data center operations.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Serve as the liaison between IT teams and facilities staff, ensuring flawless communication.
  • Interpret electrical one-line diagrams, distribution drawings, and cooling schematics to support incident response and planning.
  • Install, rack, cable, and support enterprise IT systems including Dell PowerEdge, Nutanix, NetApp, and Cisco technologies.
  • Support day-to-day moves, adds, and changes (MACs) in building IDF and VDER environments.
  • Perform fiber and copper patch cabling in data centers, IDFs, and VDER closets.
  • Trace and troubleshoot cabling issues to restore connectivity.
  • Monitor infrastructure, proactively detect issues, and bring up with urgency to appropriate teams.
  • Apply AI-enabled monitoring and automation platforms to enhance data center operations.
  • Maintain documentation of infrastructure layouts, procedures, and operational standards.
  • Participate in capacity planning, disaster recovery drills, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Provide clear and concise direction to internal and external consultants to increase productivity.
  • Review and coordinate facility-related maintenances (Mechanical and Electrical) with Facilities teams and notify stakeholders of upcoming activities with potential impacts.
  • Support on-site projects / tasks as needed.
