Associate Director, Congress Planning & Execution - US Remote
What you will do
The Associate Director, Congress Planning & Execution leads Amgen’s Therapeutic Area (TA) Congress Planning function within the centralized Amgen Congress Team (ACT). This leader is responsible for managing a team of Senior Managers and Project Managers in the strategic planning, delivery, and post-congress performance evaluation of Tier 1 and high-priority Tier 2 congresses globally.
Operating at the intersection of science, strategy, and execution, this role ensures cross-functional alignment with Medical, Marketing, Compliance, and external partners to deliver consistent, impactful, and compliant congress experiences. The role is critical to advancing Amgen's mission of scientific leadership and meaningful HCP engagement across global markets.
Leadership & People Development
- Lead, coach, and develop a high-performing team of congress planners across multiple therapeutic areas, including people leadership of Senior Managers and Project Managers.
- Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement aligned to the ACT competency model (Strategic Thinking, Execution Excellence, Business Acumen, and Communication).
- Partner with the Senior Director and peer Associate Directors (e.g., Operations, Speaker Programs) to align strategic and operational deliverables across the ACT function.
Congress Planning & Strategic Oversight
- Oversee the annual TA congress planning process, including calendar development, budget alignment, and resource allocation in partnership with therapeutic and cross-functional leads.
- Ensure consistent use of ACT tools and processes including Congress Briefs, Alignment Call Decks, Playbooks, KPI dashboards, and Post-Congress Debriefs.
- Serve as an escalation point for cross-functional partners and vendors for issue resolution, alignment, and performance feedback.
Operational Excellence & Execution
- Drive flawless execution of congress activities, ensuring risk mitigation, regulatory compliance, and alignment to HCP engagement goals.
- Govern integration of planning milestones, vendor deliverables, and on-site execution requirements across functions (booth, OL engagement, logistics, etc.).
- Support measurement and reporting of congress success using ACT metrics such as badge scans, fast sensor data, booth traffic, OL engagement data, and stakeholder feedback.
Budget & Resource Stewardship
- Guide financial planning for congress activities across TAs, ensuring accurate allocation, reconciliation, and tracking in the ACT Budget Platform.
- Provide oversight and final approval for congress SOWs, POs, and vendor spend in collaboration with Operations, Finance, and Procurement teams.

Basic Qualifications:
Doctorate degree and 3 years of experience in congress/event planning, strategic operations, or cross-functional program management in the pharmaceutical, biotech, or healthcare industries.

Master’s degree and 5 years of experience in congress/event planning, strategic operations, or cross-functional program management in the pharmaceutical, biotech, or healthcare industries.
Or
Bachelor’s degree and 7 years of experience in congress/event planning, strategic operations, or cross-functional program management in the pharmaceutical, biotech, or healthcare industries.
Or
Associate’s degree and 12 years of experience in congress/event planning, strategic operations, or cross-functional program management in the pharmaceutical, biotech, or healthcare industries.
Or
High school diploma / GED and 14 years of experience in congress/event planning, strategic operations, or cross-functional program management in the pharmaceutical, biotech, or healthcare industries. experience
Preferred Qualifications:
- Advanced degree (MBA, MS, CMP, CEM, or PMP certification).
- Experience with large-scale, global congress planning across multiple TAs.
- Deep knowledge of HCP engagement regulations (PhRMA, EFPIA) and compliance processes (CAF, C3, Veeva).
- Familiarity with Amgen therapeutic areas and enterprise tools (Smartsheet, SharePoint, Salesforce).

The expected annual salary range for this role in the U.S. (excluding Puerto Rico) is posted. Actual salary will vary based on several factors including but not limited to, relevant skills, experience, and qualifications.
