Amgen is seeking an Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) Manager to support our drive for world-class EHS performance at the Amgen Capability Center Portugal (ACCP) and to provide EHS support to G&A staff across Europe, as needed. This role reports to the Global EHS Director and serves as the site EHS lead for ACCP Portugal, with strong ownership and oversight of facility-related programs and compliance.

The EHS Manager will provide primary EHS leadership for the ACCP Portugal facility, with a strong focus on facility, regulatory compliance, and contractor oversight. This role requires deep engagement with the facilities manager and landlord, ensuring that building systems, workplace design, and contracted services consistently meet local regulatory requirements, Amgen EHS standards, and staff comfort expectations.

The successful candidate will act as the EHS authority for all facility-related activities at ACCP Portugal, serving as a trusted advisor to site leadership and facilities, and ensuring EHS risks are proactively identified, assessed, and controlled.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Facilities & Site EHS Leadership (Primary Focus)
  • Serve as the EHS and Facilities lead at ACCP Portugal
  • Lead EHS review and approval of facility changes, projects, and space modifications prior to implementation
  • Ensure facility risk assessments are current and controls are effective
  • Coordinate and lead facility inspections, audits, and corrective action tracking
  • Partner closely with the Facilities Manager to ensure:
    • Building systems, layouts, and modifications comply with local codes, regulatory requirements, and Amgen standards
    • Fire life safety systems, alarms, emergency lighting, and evacuation routes are compliant, tested, and documented
    • Contractor activities (maintenance, construction, cleaning, security) are risk assessed, controlled, and monitored
  • Program Leadership
  • Lead implementation and continuous improvement of EHS programs and initiatives at ACCP Portugal
  • Provide EHS support to G&A offices and remote workers across Europe, as needed
  • Own and lead the ergonomics program, including workplace design and remote work support
  • Lead incident reporting, investigation, root cause analysis, and corrective actions
  • Analyze and communicate EHS performance and facility-related trends to leadership
  • Deliver EHS training, including onboarding, emergency response, ergonomics, inspections, and situational awareness
  • Drive a strong safety culture through leadership engagement, visibility, and accountability

Governance & Interfaces

  • Reports to the Director, Global EHS
  • Frequent interaction with Global and Regional EHS teams
  • Dotted-line relationship to ACCP Portugal site lead
  • Strong, ongoing partnership with Facilities Management, Real Estate, and external contractors

Key Experience & Competencies

  • Strong leadership and influence across technical and non-technical teams
  • Facilities and building safety management in office or commercial environments
  • Fire life safety systems, emergency preparedness, and evacuation planning
  • Contractor and vendor oversight
  • Ergonomics (onsite, hybrid, and remote work)
  • Safety culture and psychological safety
  • Incident management and injury prevention
  • Environmental compliance, permits, and sustainability
  • Regulatory compliance within EU/Portugal frameworks

Minimum Requirements

  • Doctorate degree OR
  • Master’s degree and 2 years of directly related experience OR
  • Bachelor’s degree and 4 years of directly related experience OR
  • Associate’s degree and 10 years of directly related experience OR
  • High school diploma / GED and 12 years of directly related experience

Preferred Requirements

  • Trained ergonomist
  • Project Management and facilities management experience
  • Knowledge of EHS regulations as they pertain to office-based operations in Europe
  • Strong communication and presentation skills, action oriented, self-starting, program development and project management
  • Fluency in English and Portuguese, both written and spoken
  • Proficient in Microsoft suite programs and data management tools
