ABOUT THE ROLE

Role Description:

We are seeking a seasoned Sr Manager of Data Engineering to drive the development and implementation of our data strategy for Manufacturing and Clinical Supply Chain. The ideal candidate possesses a strong blend of technical expertise and data-driven problem-solving skills. As a Sr Manager Data Engineering, you will play a crucial role in leading, designing, building, and optimizing our data pipelines and platforms while mentoring junior engineers. 

Roles & Responsibilities:

• Lead the design, development and production rollout of enterprise data pipelines, ETL/ELT processes, and data integration solutions that meet Amgen’s performance, reliability, security, and compliance requirements.

• Own end-to-end delivery for data pipeline projects — from conception, scoping and planning through implementation, testing, deployment and ongoing operations — actively managing timelines, scope, risks and stakeholders.

• Set technical direction and architecture for cloud-native, scalable data solutions (AWS preferred), ensuring cost-effective, resilient designs that support batch and near-real-time workloads.

• Establish and enforce data quality, lineage and integrity practices through automated testing, monitoring, observability and remedial processes.

• Drive adoption of data engineering best practices, standards and patterns across teams (coding standards, modular reusable pipelines, deployment automation, documentation and observability).

• Build and operationalize CI/CD, automation and release pipelines (including code versioning, Jenkins or equivalent, promotion/migration tooling) to accelerate delivery while reducing risk.

• Serve as a strategic partner to data analysts, data scientists, product owners and business leaders — translating business requirements into pragmatic, high-impact data solutions and roadmaps.

• Identify, investigate and resolve complex data challenges — performance, scale, reliability, security and cross-system integration issues — and drive continuous improvement.

• Lead, mentor and grow a team of data engineers: hire top talent, run performance reviews, define career paths, and foster a collaborative, learning culture.

• Ensure compliance with Amgen’s data governance, security and privacy policies (and applicable regulations), and work with governance, IT and legal stakeholders as needed.

• Manage vendor/partner relationships, resource planning, and contribute to budgeting and roadmap prioritization for the data engineering organization.

• Drive continuous learning: keep the organization up to date on modern data technologies and trends and evaluate new tools and patterns for adoption.

Functional Skills:

Must-Have Skills:

• Demonstrated hands-on experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP) and the ability to architect cost-effective and scalable data solutions. 

• Proficiency in Python, PySpark, SQL. Hands on experience with big data ETL performance tuning. 

• Strong development knowledge in Databricks. 

• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to address complex data challenges. 

Good-to-Have Skills:

• Experienced with data modeling and performance tuning

• Experienced working with Apache Spark, Apache Airflow 

• Experienced with software engineering best-practices, including but not limited to version control (Git, Subversion, etc.), CI/CD (Jenkins, Maven etc.), automated unit testing, and Dev Ops 

• Experience in SQL/NOSQL database, vector database for large language models 

• Experience with prompt engineering, model fine tuning 

• Experience with DevOps/MLOps CICD build and deployment pipeline 

Professional Certifications (please mention if the certification is preferred or mandatory for the role):

• AWS Certified Data Engineer (preferred) 

• Databricks Certification (preferred) 

• Any SAFe Agile certification (preferred)

Basic Qualifications:

• Master’s degree with 10 - 15 years of experience in Computer Science, IT or related field OR

• Bachelor’s degree with 12 - 17 years of experience in Computer Science, IT or related field OR
