The Role
The Vice President, Global Medical Affairs, Obesity and Related Conditions (OaRC) is a key role that will provide overall strategic leadership and be directly responsible for the global medical strategy, capability, governance, operations, performance, compliance, and personnel management. The successful candidate will be a member of the Global Medical Senior Leadership Team (SLT) and the Obesity and Related Conditions organization SLT.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Provide strategic insight, direction, and approval to patient-focused medical strategies that drive positive outcomes for patients and prepare for accelerated access and use of Amgen¡¦s medicines
- Establish and maintain peer-to-peer partnerships with global thought-leaders in Obesity and Related Conditions such as HCP opinion leaders, professional organization leaders, and population-health decision makers
- Serve as an internal expert in the disease area, representing the unmet needs of patients, providers, and population-health decision makers
- Lead and ensure accountability with global medical governance and business planning processes, including annual strategic planning and goal setting, LRS and budget planning and quarterly medical reviews, and performance management in alignment with global business and financial timeframes
- Direct medical teams in navigating products through internal governance and external (as appropriate) regulatory interactions. Direct Global Medical OaRC Leadership meetings.
- Partner with Global Commercial, Development, OCMO and other Enterprise Leaders, driving accountability for the health of the business.
- Develop and ensure seamless execution of Global Medical budget and resource strategy in collaboration with the leader of the Obesity and Related Conditions Organization, and other cross functional stakeholders.
- Drive peer accountabilities and exercise influence at all levels with partner functions to execute on global priorities.
- Represent Global Medical perspectives on cross-functional governance meetings. Promote appropriate functional end-to-end execution and resolve interdepartmental issues.
- Drive positive patient outcomes by partnering with internal cross functional stakeholders, global payors and providers, and patient and professional societies to shape the healthcare ecosystem.
- Partners cross-functionally to develop and drive advocacy strategies and lead relationships, as appropriate. Drive global scientific engagement strategy.
- Drive access and use evidence generation OaRC strategy and ensure proper integration into cross-functional prioritization and governance as necessary.
- Ensure appropriate conduct of evidence generation activities in partnership with Global Development Operations, Center for Observational Research and Health Economics.
- Demonstrate value of Global Medical through clear and consistent measures of performance and impact aligned to prioritized agenda to drive continuous improvement.
- Recruit, retain, coach, mentor, motivate, and develop talent.
- Cultivate a collaborative, inclusive, and psychologically safe culture that encourages diverse opinions, risk-taking, learning, and innovation.
- Ensure conduct of medical activities in full compliance of all laws, regulations, and SOPs.
- Ensure appropriate medical staff training, staff competency, and adherence with role-based curriculum
- Provide strategic input into and ensure scientific appropriateness of labels regulatory/reimbursement/ policy/promotional and medical deliverables globally.
- Drive impactful, innovative scientific communication strategies (e.g., publications, content, audience, core knowledge points) aligned to a global prioritized agenda.
- Provide strategic input into data interpretation and analysis, as appropriate.
- Oversee IME, donations, medical grants, and sponsorships.
- Ensure scientific/clinical oversight for due diligence in partnership with Business Development and ensure support for partner relationships.
The Person
- Medical degree (M.D.) or equivalent.
- Demonstrated ability as a medical expert in a complex matrix environment.
- Pharmaceutical product development, product lifecycle, and commercialization process knowledge.
- Strong Medical Affairs experience with understanding of other functions, including but not limited to, Clinical Development, Clinical Operations, Value & Access, Safety, Regulatory and Commercial.
- Experience and knowledge in obesity and/or obesity related conditions, broader cardiometabolic expertise will also be considered.
- Experience in global/regional/local medical practice and healthcare ecosystems.
- Skilled at engagement and scientific exchange with external medical community.
- Clinical research experience.
- In-depth understanding of the scientific method and clinical applications based on medical, scientific, and practical rationale.
- Familiarity with concepts of clinical research and clinical trial design, including biostatistics.
- Sound scientific and clinical judgement.
- Knowledge of Good Clinical Practices (GCP), regional regulations and guidelines, and applicable international regulatory requirements.
- Familiarity of pharmaceutical industry and legal/health system environment.
- Finance/budgeting and resource management experience.
- Strong and proven ability to lead, manage, and motivate others in a complex, multi-functional, multi-national matrix environment.
- Skilled at effectively presenting ideas and documenting complex medical/clinical concepts in both written and oral communication.
- Experience solving problems while exhibiting superior judgment and a balanced, realistic understanding of issues.
- Network of medical clinical contacts in disease areas.
