Director Amgen Ventures

What you will do

Let’s do this. Let’s change the world. Amgen Ventures is the strategic venture capital arm of Amgen, investing in innovative biotechnology companies and venture funds that advance scientific innovation aligned with Amgen’s long-term research and business development priorities.

As a Director on the Amgen Ventures team, you will play a key role in sourcing, evaluating, executing, and managing venture investments across therapeutics, technology platforms, and emerging healthcare innovations. Working closely with Research & Development, Business Development, Strategy, Corporate Finance, Legal, and portfolio company leadership, you will help identify opportunities that provide strategic insight, scientific connectivity, and financial returns while helping shape the future of biotechnology.

Responsibilities:

Investment Sourcing & Evaluation

  • Identify and evaluate private biotechnology companies, healthcare technology companies, and venture capital funds aligned with Amgen’s strategic and scientific priorities.
  • Maintain active relationships with entrepreneurs, venture capital firms, academic institutions, incubators, company creation platforms, and innovation ecosystems.
  • Monitor emerging scientific, clinical, competitive, and investment trends across biotechnology, life sciences, AI-enabled drug discovery, and healthcare technology.
  • Perform scientific, strategic, commercial, competitive, and financial due diligence on prospective investments.

Transaction Execution

  • Support the execution of venture investments, including direct equity investments, syndicate financing, company creation opportunities, and limited partner fund investments.
  • Participate in transaction structuring, valuation analysis, term sheet review, and investment documentation alongside Legal and Finance partners.
  • Prepare investment recommendations and present analyses to Amgen Ventures/Business Development leadership and governance committees.

Portfolio Management & Strategic Engagement

  • Support management of existing portfolio companies and fund relationships.
  • Serve as a strategic liaison between portfolio companies and relevant stakeholders across Amgen.
  • Assist with board observer responsibilities, portfolio monitoring, investment updates, and strategic follow-up.
  • Identify opportunities for scientific collaboration, business development engagement, and strategic partnerships between Amgen and portfolio companies.

Cross-Functional Leadership

  • Collaborate closely with Research, Business Development, Strategy, Corporate Finance, Legal, and other cross-functional partners.
  • Build strong internal networks to facilitate scientific evaluation and strategic engagement around investment opportunities.
  • Contribute to portfolio reviews and leadership reporting, investment committee discussions, venture strategy development, and market /competitive intelligence strategy.

What we expect of you

We are all different, yet we all use our unique contributions to serve patients. The professional we seek is a strategic and scientifically grounded investment leader with the following qualifications.

Basic Qualifications:

Doctorate degree and 4 years in a scientific field and experience in venture capital, corporate venture capital, biotech investing, private equity, investment banking, business development, or transactions

OR

Master’s degree and 7 years in a scientific field and experience in venture capital, corporate venture capital, biotech investing, private equity, investment banking, business development, or transactions

OR

Bachelor’s degree and 9 years in a scientific field and experience in venture capital, corporate venture capital, biotech investing, private equity, investment banking, business development, or transactions

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced scientific expertise in biotechnology, therapeutics, drug discovery, platform technologies, AI-enabled drug development, or healthcare innovation, combined with direct investment or strategic transaction experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to evaluate biotechnology companies, venture funds, and emerging technologies; conduct scientific, strategic, competitive, clinical, commercial, and financial diligence; and assess venture financing structures, cap tables, valuations, and investment terms.
  • Strong understanding of the biotechnology, pharmaceutical, venture capital, and startup ecosystems, with the ability to translate complex scientific and business information into clear investment recommendations.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and relationship-building skills, with the ability to engage entrepreneurs, investors, academic founders, and senior industry leaders while managing multiple investment opportunities in a highly collaborative environment.

The expected annual salary range for this role in the U.S. (excluding Puerto Rico) is posted. Actual salary will vary based on several factors including but not limited to, relevant skills, experience, and qualifications.
