One Intern’s Story of Growth and Connection

Raising Tomorrow’s Leaders

Andréa Ball initially joined our team as an Amgen Scholar. At the time, she admitted, the biotech industry was a mystery.
It didn’t take long to change that view.
By witnessing our supportive culture towards interns and realizing the impact she could make to patients worldwide, Andréa was eager to return to our team as an intern.

A Culture of Empowerment

Amgen paid internships are an opportunity for students and recent graduates to hone their skills and recognize how far their knowledge can go. Here, we help the interns who walk through our doors feel right at home by providing our full support. After all, today’s students are tomorrow’s leaders—and they can make real change happen today.

Across multiple organizations, we have been named a best employer for new graduates. Our dedication to our team members is just one aspect of this. We offer our interns assignments that provide real-world experience, where they can connect with mentors and tackle projects outside of their comfort zone. For those looking to dive deep into what makes us a biotech leader, we also offer MBA internships in Finance, Operations and Commercial Leadership that explore Amgen’s many sides of business.

What do these opportunities look like in practice? We spoke with Andréa to hear more about the experience—including her first impressions of Amgen and how the time spent with us has enhanced her graduate studies.

What inspired you to choose Amgen for your internship, and how has the experience matched your expectations?

"My first introduction to Amgen was when I was an undergraduate researcher, as an Amgen Scholar. I’ve known since then that Amgen values training young scientists and knew that an internship would similarly provide a worthwhile, hands-on experience. I am thankful that Amgen has played a role in each stage of my scientific career."

How has this internship helped you grow professionally, and what new skills or insights have you gained so far?

"As a graduate student in academia, the biotech industry was a very mysterious place to me. Through this internship, I’ve been able to gain insights into what discovery research looks like in an industry setting and what skills I should continue to develop as I return to my graduate studies. Jumping into a new project, outside my current area of research, was also daunting at first, but it has helped me to gain confidence in my abilities as a scientist."

What aspect of the company culture stands out to you the most, and how has it influenced your experience here?

"The biggest aspect that stands out to me is that at Amgen people are more than just the sum of their work. Each person is valued and cared for as an individual."

Would you recommend this internship to other students or recent graduates? If so, what would you tell them to expect?

"I would 100% recommend this internship to other students! I really feel like I was able to contribute in a meaningful way to the goals of the team, and I have made lasting connections. They should certainly expect to work hard and get outside of their comfort zone a little bit, but in the end, they will be a better researcher."

Unlock Your Potential

Through our paid internship, Andréa had the flexibility to learn new skills and participate in projects outside of her comfort zone. That flexibility, along with our supportive and inclusive culture, has empowered her to make meaningful contributions to her team and Amgen as a whole!

An internship is more than a chance for students to earn school credit. At Amgen, we’re helping leaders find their footing and unlock more for their careers. It’s through their perspectives—and perhaps your perspective, too—that we continue making progress in our mission to serve patients worldwide.

Whatever your background or field of study is, we’re full of opportunities for students and recent graduates who are looking to make a difference. Click below to learn more about our internships, benefits, and culture.
