Grad Intern – Bioinformatics Technologies (Summer 2025)
What You Will Do
Let’s do this. Let’s change the world. During this program, you will We are actively seeking a highly qualified and motivated grad intern with a strong background in computational biology. The grad intern will join the Bioinformatics Technologies team within Amgen’s Center for Research Acceleration by Digital Innovation. Our organization is a multi-disciplinary effort embedded within our drug discovery engine that continually uses advancement in digital technologies for disease modeling and digital modality engineering to accelerate our pipeline from target inception through drug development. The Bioinformatics Technologies team plays an integral role in establishing an innovation engine for deploying and exploiting emerging digital technologies in the field of computational biology.
Spatial omics technologies integrate spatially resolved sequencing, protein quantification and image analysis to uncover molecular and cellular interactions within the tissue microenvironment. This enables the study of gene expression within the context of tissue architecture, offering insights into cellular interactions and spatial organization. This technology can accelerate drug discovery by deepening and enhancing our understanding of disease biology, identifying novel biomarkers, and optimizing therapeutic targets in their native tissue environments. In this role, you will design and implement innovative computational methods to advance the discovery of biological insights from spatial omics data.
The successful candidate will possess strong analytical aptitude, have a high degree of technical competency in computational sciences with a theoretical understanding of machine learning and graph theory, paired with excellent understanding of molecular biology, ideally experience with spatial sequencing technologies, proven by a track record of innovative and collaborative research. An ability to communicate clearly and collaborate effectively with colleagues from different fields will be essential.
In this role, you will:
This internship will leverage advanced computational methods and AI/ML techniques to develop innovative solutions that deepen our understanding of tissue architecture and cellular interactions. You will work closely with senior-level scientists to design, develop, and implement AI/ML models aimed at optimizing the analysis and interpretation of spatial omics data, advancing research on tissue structure and function. This technology is crucial for accelerating drug discovery by identifying novel biomarkers, enhancing our understanding of disease mechanisms, and refining therapeutic targets in their native tissue environments.
Your role will involve:
- Designing and implementing AI/ML models to analyze spatial omics data, including training, validation, and performance evaluation with a focus on capturing tissue-specific patterns and biological insights essential for drug discovery
- Reviewing relevant literature to stay up to date with the latest AI/ML techniques applied to spatial omics, tissue research, and their role in understanding disease mechanisms
- Contributing to experiments to inspire new computational strategies and refine data collection methods, improving how spatial omics can uncover novel therapeutic targets and insights into tissue-specific biological processes
- Collaborating within a cross-functional team to interpret model outputs, refine algorithms, and improve spatial data analysis
This internship offers hands-on experience in AI/ML model employment and development, data preprocessing, and algorithm optimization, with a focus on spatial omics and its potential to drive biological insights for drug discovery and therapeutic optimization.
At the conclusion of the internship, you will present a summary of your work, highlighting model improvements, key findings, and identified future directions for ML/AI-driven interpretation of spatial omics data analysis.
