The Commercial Data Strategy team at Amgen serves as a key partner to the Commercial organization by ensuring data can be provided to the organization to drive actionable insights, while remaining compliant with ongoing regulations. As the Executive Director of Commercial Data Management & Strategy, you will lead a team of 4 directors and oversee a total team size of 30 individuals located in various time zones. The Executive Director will be responsible for providing strategic direction on data acquisition strategies to ensure we are maximizing our ability to understand product and market performance, maintain, and enhance our data platforms and ensure our data management practices maintain quality and constantly adapt to the changing needs of the business. This senior leadership role is pivotal in driving data-driven decision-making, optimizing commercial operations, and enhancing the overall business performance through innovative data strategies. This role requires a dynamic leader who can navigate complex environments, foster collaboration, and drive innovation to maximize the commercial success of Amgen's portfolio. The individual in this role will need to skillfully influence and challenge a diverse set of senior stakeholders from Commercial, Market Access, Medical, Finance, and our Digital Technology & Innovation (DTI) teams, while proficiently understanding the nuances of all therapeutic areas in which Amgen operates.
Additionally, the Executive Director of Data Management & Strategy will play a pivotal role within the CD&A leadership team, collaborating closely with colleagues to ensure alignment and synergies across functions. This individual will work hand-in-hand with leaders from market research, analytics, competitive intelligence, data science, field excellence, marketing investment optimization, and other relevant areas to leverage their insights and expertise in developing comprehensive strategies and plans.The Executive Director role represents an exciting opportunity to lead a talented team and collaborate with diverse stakeholders across the organization to develop, enhance and maintain robust data strategies and quarterly implementation plans that help fuel the analytical and reporting needs of the business, drive business growth and innovation in the dynamic pharmaceutical industry landscape.
This position will report to the AVP of Portfolio Effectiveness and Optimization and will be responsible for the following pillars within the Data Management & Strategy team:
Data Acquisition and Governance – This team plays a vital role in ensuring the integrity, accuracy, and reliability of data used in the commercialization of our brands. This team also provides strategic direction to the organization related to newly available data sources and what type of data acquisition strategy we should employ in order to meet the needs of the business. Finally, this team maintains relationships with data vendors and is responsible for ongoing negotiation strategies to ensure we yield the most value from the data we acquire.
Master Data Management – Master Data Management (MDM) plays a crucial role in the commercial organization by ensuring data integrity, accuracy, and compliance. The MDM team is responsible for managing and maintaining the core data that helps us understand how our HCP and HCO customers are utilizing our products as well as those in the market. Additionally, the MDM team has ownership of our Patient and Consent Masters, ensuring that we remain compliant with consent preferences across the portfolio.
Data Platforms – This team functions as the backbone of data management, ensuring that data is accurately collected, efficiently processed, and effectively utilized across various departments. Collaboration is essential for the Data Platforms Team. They work closely with the DTI team to ensure the technical infrastructure supports data initiatives. Additionally, they liaise with other departments across the CD&A organization to align data strategies with the overall business objectives. Our primary data platform solution managed by this team, iDNA, is a crucial entity that fuels the data for the commercial organization to be able to make informed decisions.
Patient Data Management - This team is responsible for the collection, governance, and management of anonymized patient data to support various business functions. As patient data are aggregated from various sources, this team ensures the proper linkages to ensure we have a consistent and accurate view of patient data as we perform analyses and, ultimately, work to improve patient outcomes. This team works across multiple functions including Legal, Compliance, DTI, and Commercial teams to establish the Patient data integration and analytics strategy as well as ongoing operations for the Patient data domain. In addition, this team works closely with the data management leads across Amgen functions (external to Commercial) to develop an enterprise Patient Level Data integration strategy. This team continuously enhances our patient data platform, Customer 360, to add increasing value to our patient analytics efforts.
Specific responsibilities for this role include the following activities:
Function as a catalyst for critical thinking within the Data Management & Strategy team and among senior-level cross-functional partners, rigorously challenging the status quo and encouraging the organization to create forward-looking data management solutions.
Develop forward-looking strategies to ensure our platforms can meet the emerging analytical capabilities surrounding structured and unstructured pharmaceutical data
Influencing, negotiating, and building trusting relationships across multiple stakeholder teams within and outside of Commercial
Collaborate with leadership team to stay ahead of industry trends, best practices, and emerging technologies in data acquisition, master data management, data platforms and the use of AI solutions in enhancing data quality and usability.
Lead vendor evaluations to actively seek out new data assets and refine data strategies based new market dynamics and collaborate with Global Strategic Sourcing on data negotiations with vendors to maximize the value of the data for Amgen
Oversee data governance strategies to ensure appropriate usage of commercial data
Collaborate with the DTI organization to ensure a one-team approach with the data and engineering team so that strategies and tactics are seamlessly pulled-through into our data platforms in a scalable, secure, and robust way,
Ensure seamless integration of data platforms with other enterprise systems and tools.
Ensure compliant operations and processing of patient level assets, ensuring adherence to all Amgen privacy and compliance SOPs for patient level data assets
Develop and execute strategy for linking multiple data sets across Patient Level Data sources to support robust longitudinal analytics at the patient and prescriber level (linking data across SPP, Hub, and Syndicated data sets)
Ensure data quality and transparency through comprehensive data stewardship, partnering closely with other data functions (Master Data Management, Patient Data Management, Enterprise Data teams, etc.)
Present to executive leadership on patient level data strategy, providing recommendations on how these data can be utilized to inform decisions
Develop the long term, end to end roadmap for Data Access & Platforms capabilities
Drive measurable operational productivity that delivers cost savings, improved cycle times, traceability, and tangible benefit to stakeholders
Collaborate closely with DTI to evolve and simplify access to complex and evolving data assets, working closely with cross-functional stakeholders (Analytics teams, Field Excellence, Contracts & Pricing, Medical, etc.)
Comprehensive understanding of end-to-end Commercial data flows to identify and remediate interdependencies
Accountable for development roadmap for all Commercial onboarding and data integration plans, including but not limited to product launches, mergers, and acquisitions
Lead team management efforts, including hiring, training, and performance management, to ensure the development and retention of top talent within the team.
Provide ongoing training and development opportunities for team members to ensure they remain up to date on relevant technologies and methodologies and continue to evolve with changing industry trends.

Basic Qualifications:
Doctorate degree & 6 years of data management experience OR
Master’s degree & 10 years of data management experience OR
Bachelor’s degree & 12 years of data management experience AND
6 years of managerial experience directly managing people and/or leadership experience leading teams, projects, programs or directing the allocation of resources
Preferred Qualifications:
Leadership in building and developing high-performing teams, with a focus on fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement
Ability to establish credibility with and influence senior executives at the SVP/VP level, effectively communicating complex concepts and insights to drive strategic decision-making
Alignment with best practices and a commitment to championing new and innovative methodologies and tools to enhance data strategies and solutions to drive business outcomes
Business acumen with a deep understanding of the context and dynamics of pharmaceutical markets, particularly within relevant disease areas, allowing for informed decision-making and strategic planning.
Experience partnering closely with business leaders to deliver high-quality predictions and insights that guide strategic initiatives, optimize resource allocation, and maximize commercial success
Oral, written, and presentation skills, with the ability to articulate complex concepts and controversial findings clearly and compellingly to diverse audiences, including senior management and cross-functional stakeholders
Project management experience (planning, prioritization, objective setting, meeting management, and plan execution)
