What you will do

Let’s do this. Let’s change the world. In this vital role as Executive Director, Oncology Research you will work cross-functionally to develop and implement strategies to identify and advance innovative molecules that address high unmet medical need in hematologic malignancies and solid tumors.

The Oncology Research team at Amgen is driven to discover and develop novel precision oncology and immune-oncology therapies that will bring meaningful benefit to cancer patients. In this role, you will lead a portfolio of large molecule programs, focused on antibody-drug conjugates.

You will be leading and managing a research team focused on target discovery and validation, preclinical characterization of therapeutic candidates, and translational research to support clinical-stage programs.

You will be an exceptional leader and people manager who balances strategic vision with scientific expertise.  Broad knowledge of cancer biology and experience with drug development, together with proven ability to excel in a fast-paced, matrixed environment will be essential.  This is a high-visibility role both within Amgen and externally.

Responsibilities:

  • Supervise and mentor a team of scientists and project leaders to deliver high quality data and make critical decisions for therapeutic programs and technology platforms

  • Contribute to the development and implementation of the Oncology therapeutic area strategy

  • Work closely with other executive directors/directors in Oncology research to define research priorities and support research goals

  • Develop strong partnerships with colleagues across research and development and beyond to effectively advance programs and initiatives

  • Represent Oncology research in the evaluation of business development opportunities

  • Lead or mentor leads for external partnerships, including academic collaborations

Basic Qualifications:

  • Doctorate degree & 6 years of directly related experience OR

  • Master’s degree & 10 years of directly related experience OR

  • Bachelor’s degree & 12 years of directly related experience AND

  • 6 years of managerial experience directly managing people and/or leadership experience leading teams, projects, programs or directing the allocation of resources

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Doctoral degree in Cancer Biology, Cell Biology, Immunology, or related field with at least 13 years of experience in industry or an academic position following postdoctoral training

  • Inclusive leadership style that puts patients and science first and develops talent at all levels

  • Proven scientific accomplishment and innovation in oncology research as evidenced by high-impact publications, congress presentations and patent submissions

  • Direct experience in selecting and advancing therapeutic antibody-drug conjugate candidates

  • Demonstrated experience in drug discovery and development with direct experience as a program lead, including target identification and validation, lead candidate selection, IND submission and interactions with regulatory authorities, and support of clinical-stage programs

  • Experience leading external partnerships and research collaborations

  • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills

The annual base salary range for this opportunity in the U.S. is $285,000 - $345,000K.
