Process Development Associate Scientist
What you will do
Let’s do this. Let’s change the world. In this vital role you will help design and perform experiments at the bench scale and pilot scale that focus on all aspects of downstream purification. In this role, you will apply established platform approaches and utilize problem-solving skills to rapidly solve day-to-day experimental challenges. Additionally, the Process Development Associate Scientist will utilize out-of-the-box thinking to contribute to technology development and will demonstrate the desire to expand and develop expertise in all aspects of process development, thereby further contributing to the integrated group.
This position will be within an expanding Pre-Pivotal Process Development subgroup, located in Rockville, Maryland.
- Contribute within a project team on goals such as performing molecule assessments and fit-to-platform and troubleshooting more challenging to purify proteins for enhanced process yields and robustness
- Purification experiments include, but are not limited to, affinity, ion exchange and hydrophobic interaction chromatography, depth and membrane filtration, and UF/DF operations
- Automation programming for chromatography, normal and tangential flow filtration, and robotic liquid handling systems
- Experimental design and testing, leveraging in-house analytical instruments and data visualization tools
- Communication of findings through oral presentations and written documentation (technical reports as well as GMP documents to support regulatory filings)
- Provide scientific technical support for technology transfer and scaling-up processes to manufacturing sites within the Amgen technical operations network
What we expect of you

Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree and 3 years of Scientific experience; Or
- Master’s degree and 1 year of Scientific experience
Preferred Qualifications:
- Degree in Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Bioengineering, Biomedical engineering, or Bioprocessing discipline or relevant experience in the pharmaceutical or related industry preferred.
- Two+ years of biotech/pharma industry experience with emphasis on protein purification of products from various mammalian or bacterial expression hosts
- Strong knowledge and experience of purification for antibodies or other recombinant proteins
- Experience in laboratory techniques supporting protein purification and or bioreactor operations
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to work flexibly in a dynamic and collaborative environment
- Demonstrated ability to identify and solve problems by applying scientific and engineering principles, preferably in a process development environment
- Familiarity with design of experiments and statistical analysis of data

The expected annual salary range for this role in the U.S. (excluding Puerto Rico) is posted. Actual salary will vary based on several factors including but not limited to, relevant skills, experience, and qualifications.
