Strategic Planning & Operations Associate Director

What you will do

Let’s do this! Let’s change the world! In this vital role, you will serve as the Chief of Staff for the Amgen Massachusetts (AMA) site. This leader will play a central role in orchestrating strategic planning, operations, cross-functional alignment, and staff engagement for the more than 600 staff members in AMA. This is a high-impact, high-visibility role ideal for someone who thrives in fast-paced, matrixed environments and can move seamlessly between strategy, operations, communications, and delivery.

Key Responsibilities:

Executive Leadership Management

  • Serve as an active member of the AMA Senior Leadership Team (AMA SLT) by managing the agenda planning, coordination, and facilitation of weekly leadership meetings and quarterly business reviews
  • Lead the planning, content creation, cross-functional management, and day-of logistics for annual Operations Leadership Team (OLT) and Process Development Senior leadership Team (PD SLT) site visits and business reviews
  • On an ad hoc basis, prepare and present business updates or site overviews to the CEO, COO, CSO, Government affairs and leaders from around the globe, including other visiting Amgen executives
  • Manage the site Senior Associate, Project Management who will support the planning and execution of site events

Strategic Planning

  • Work closely with the AMA SLT drive the annual site strategic planning, goal setting, and budget planning for the upcoming year ensuring cross-functional alignment with the broader Process Development organization.
  • Actively manage and update AMA’s 1-year, 3-year, and long-range strategic plans as the site and organization evolves.
  • Translate site strategy into prioritized, executable initiatives.
  • Manage and adjust the AMA SLT dashboard to track and visualize site goals and metrics.
  • Manage the Site quarterly business reviews and summarize the portfolio and business results.
  • Recommend and implement improvements to the site operating model and communicate site deliverables quarterly to the site.

Site Operations

  • Handle everyday execution of site strategy, supporting cross-functional priorities, and key decisions
  • Be an active member in all of AMA’s governances, committees, councils, and taskforces to ensure all site initiatives are progressing and risks are mitigated
  • Partner with HR, Facilities, Technology, Corporate Affairs, EH&S, and Finance to support budget, talent, engagement, and facilities strategies.
  • Take the “staff” in Chief of Staff to heart, providing support to all Amgen staff ensuring that everyone fells included and remains happy and healthy.
  • Participate in the PD Lab Operations Network and serve as the AMA-level voice for lab operations coordination, including capital purchase optimization and site-wide lab ops strategy
  • Collaborate with Global Facilities Operations on key initiatives including lifecycle planning for lab equipment and PD assets, optimizing space and building usage, and enhancing lab operations

PD Business Strategy Integration

  • Represent AMA on the PD Chief of Staff network to align strategy, budgeting, and resourcing across the network. Partner to advance site specific metrics to accurately represent site programs, deliverables and resource investments that advance and deliver to the Amgen future vision.
  • Support the broader PD Business Strategy Integration team with global business case work to provide strategic and financial guidance in support of Amgen’s product advancement
  • Sit on the PD Excellence network and drive AMA-wide productivity opportunities to help enhance the site’s impact on Process Development Year-Over-Year Productivity. Integrate AI / digital capabilities to enhance site operations (e.g., proficiency in productivity tools, data visualization and reporting, digital transformation, etc.).
  • Opportunity to participate at the leadership level in Local trade groups, supporting the integrating and advancement of AMA in the local community

Basic Qualifications:

Doctorate degree and 3 years of Strategy, Operations, Business Administration, or Consulting Experience

Or

Master’s degree and 5 years of Strategy, Operations, Business Administration, or Consulting Experience

Or

Bachelor’s degree and 7 years of Strategy, Operations, Business Administration, or Consulting Experience

Or

Associate’s degree and 12 years of Strategy, Operations, Business Administration, or Consulting Experience

Or

High school diploma / GED and 14 years of Strategy, Operations, Business Administration, or Consulting Experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience within the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry
  • Experience in Process Development, Technology Operations, or Manufacturing Strategy and Operations
  • Exceptional executive presence, judgment, and communication skills
  • Proven track record leading strategic initiatives and operating with agility
  • Expertise with executive-level presentation and cross-functional planning
  • Ability to build relationships and communicate at all levels of the organization
  • High EQ and comfort navigating ambiguity with diplomacy and influence
  • Experience with budget management (OpEx and Capex)
  • Understanding of lean and operational excellence principles

The expected annual salary range for this role in the U.S. (excluding Puerto Rico) is posted. Actual salary will vary based on several factors including but not limited to, relevant skills, experience, and qualifications.
