Strategic Planning & Operations Director, Rheumatology & Nephrology (Rare Disease)

What you will do

In this vital role you will serve as a strategic partner to the VP General Manager of the Rheumatology and Nephrology (Rare Disease) Business Unit, helping shape and operationalize Business Unit vision, strategy, governance, and execution across the portfolio. The role will drive leadership team effectiveness, cross-functional alignment, and Business Unit operating rhythm while enabling coordinated execution of key strategic priorities. This position requires a highly collaborative leader with strong strategic thinking, organizational effectiveness, communication, and business operations capabilities who can effectively influence across a complex matrixed organization.

Responsibilities include:

Strategic Execution & Business Enablement

  • Serve as a strategic partner to the VP General Manager of Rheumatology and Nephrology (Rare Disease) supporting development of the Business Unit vision and strategy, translating priorities into actionable plans, and enabling coordinated execution across the portfolio.
  • Design and lead integrated BU governance processes, and support leadership engagements, business reviews that enable cross-brand alignment, strategic prioritization, and effective decision-making across brands and functions.
  • Drive high-impact Business Unit initiatives, including capability building, portfolio resource optimization, and translation of enterprise priorities into actionable plans across the organization.
  • Provide strategic recommendations to identify opportunities, address emerging challenges, and support Business Unit priorities.
  • Lead cross-functional initiatives that advance objectives and strengthen organizational effectiveness.
  • Ensure VP preparedness for key meetings, decisions, and engagements by proactively aligning stakeholders, managing follow-up actions, and developing high-quality executive communications and presentations.
  • Help strengthen a collaborative, agile, and connected Business Unit culture through strong partnership, communication, and leadership engagement.

Leadership Team Effectiveness & Organizational Planning

  • Support design of and manage an agile Business Unit operating rhythm, including leadership team cadence, strategic planning, prioritization, and coordination of key meetings and strategic initiatives.
  • Lead or support planning processes, including annual goal setting, financial reviews, and budget coordination.
  • Drive adoption and scaling of AI, technology, and innovative capabilities to enhance organizational effectiveness and business performance.

Enterprise Partnership & Cross-Functional Leadership

  • Partner closely with BU leaders and cross-functional partners, including Finance, HR, and Data and Insights, to drive aligned decision-making and achievement of business objectives.
  • Build and maintain strong, trusted relationships with leaders across key partners to enable successful, timely delivery of priorities.
  • Represent the Business Unit in enterprise initiatives, governance forums, and cross-functional workstreams, as appropriate.
  • Support organizational adherence to Compliance policies and procedures.

Business Operations, Planning & Performance Management

  • Oversee Business Unit operational planning, budget management, and headcount tracking in close partnership with Finance and HR.
  • Manage preparation and delivery of quarterly forecasting, long-range planning, and other performance management processes to support effective resource allocation and business decision-making.
  • Ensure organizational compliance with company policies, procedures, and standards.

Basic Qualifications:

Doctorate degree and 4 years of commercial experience

OR

Master’s degree and 7 years of commercial experience

OR

Bachelor’s degree and 9 years of commercial experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in a series of commercial roles of increasing scope, scale, and complexity, with leading companies in the biopharmaceutical industry.
  • Strong understanding of Amgen’s operating model, with demonstrated ability to navigate internal processes effectively and deliver results.
  • Proactive and solution-oriented, with a positive attitude and willingness to take initiative in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal, negotiation, and relationship management
  • t skills; able to build trust and influence across functions.
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey complex information clearly and persuasively.
  • Demonstrated critical thinking, analytical, and project management capabilities, with a focus on operational excellence and organizational effectiveness.
  • Results-driven and goal-oriented, with a track record of delivering on commitments.
  • Ability to lead cross-functional projects from concept through execution.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and operate effectively across all organizational levels, including senior leadership.
  • Demonstrated ability to foster collaborative, agile, and inclusive team environments and strengthen organizational culture.
  • Ability to travel as needed.

The expected annual salary range for this role in the U.S. (excluding Puerto Rico) is posted. Actual salary will vary based on several factors including but not limited to, relevant skills, experience, and qualifications.
