What you will do
Let’s do this! Let’s change the world. In this vital role we are seeking an individual who is committed to our mission to serve patients through the deal seat. This Director on the Transactions team will play a critical role analyzing and negotiating potential deals.
We are committed to sourcing the best innovation to transform patients’ lives. At Amgen, we take a balanced approach in seeking innovation – recognizing the value of both internal and external innovation. Today, ~50% of our revenues is due to our business development activities. The Business Development (BD) team leads Amgen’s efforts to license, acquire or collaborate on externally sourced innovation. We are a lean team with high impact, reporting into the CEO.
Responsibilities:
Collaborate within BD and our key cross-functional stakeholders to assess and advance deals
Develop and recommend deal structures, financial terms and other key deal terms
Drive decision making and the deal process
Create presentations and present to the Deal Review Committee and various key senior leaders
Lead negotiations with potential partners
Work on deals of all sizes and stages – from early research to commercial assets, structures and deal structures – licensing, collaboration to M&A.
Ability to juggle multiple projects at a time with different deadlines
Interface with external parties including venture capitalists, executive management of target companies, peers in the industry and investment banks
Personal attributes:
Energetic, results driven self-starter with a strong executive presence, collaborative mentality, and ability to think strategically and analytically
Must have excellent project management skills -- projects are complex and involve many issues and functions
Strong executive communication skills (written and oral) -- frequent interaction with broad and diverse groups
Strong negotiations experience, with problem-solving capabilities
Good business instincts with financial acumen
Solid understanding of the biopharmaceutical industry and key functions
Passion for supporting difficult data-driven decisions either in support of a deal or walking-away
Demonstrated ability to build and lead teams, drive business decisions and manage multiple projects
Managerial skills are critical

Basic Qualifications:
Doctorate degree and 4 years of Business Development deal experience
Or
Master’s degree and 7 years of Business Development deal experience
Or
Bachelor’s degree and 9 years of Business Development deal experience
Preferred Qualifications:
5+ years of deal experience with a track record of successfully completing complex or value-creating deals
At least 5 years in biopharmaceutical industry
Experience managing in time intensive situations
MBA and/or JD highly desired
A combination of scientific and business education / experience could be quite helpful

The expected annual salary range for this role in the U.S. (excluding Puerto Rico) is posted. Actual salary will vary based on several factors including but not limited to, relevant skills, experience, and qualifications.
