Senior Manager, Strategic Planning & Operations, Global Development Operations

What you will do:

Let’s do this. Let’s change the world. In this vital role, you will lead strategic planning initiatives and help drive operational excellence across the organization, working closely with leaders to support execution of the strategic vision.

Amgen’s Global Development Operations (GDO) organization delivers high-quality data to advance our pipeline through strong customer partnership and operational excellence in study execution. The Senior Manager, Strategic Planning & Operations (SP&O) plays a critical role in enabling organizational effectiveness, strategic execution, and operational excellence across the function. This role is part of the GDO SP&O organization and reports to the GDO SP&O, while serving as a strategic partner to the GDO Functional Vice President and Leadership Team. The individual will lead and support execution of organizational plans, engagement and communication strategies, day-to-day business operations, executive presentations, and cross-functional coordination to help drive alignment across GDO pillars, portfolio priorities, organizational objectives, budgets, and resourcing in support of enterprise goals.

Key responsibilities for this position will include the following:

  • Serve as a strategic partner to the GDO Functional VP and Leadership Team to develop and execute organizational strategy and priorities, while aligning with GDO SP&O objectives.

  • In partnership with the Functional VP, lead and effectively organize high-functioning meetings and orchestrate town halls, events, and presentations to drive engagement and sense of purpose aligned with organizational goals.

  • Collaborate with various GDO pillars including Operational Excellence, Human Resources, Finance, IS, Compliance, and other business partners to execute organizational priorities and support prioritization and decision-making activities.

  • Serve as a key liaison between the GDO SP&O Head, Functional VP, GDO leadership teams, and other key stakeholders to drive alignment on priorities, communicate decisions, and progress actions.

  • Be an active member of the SP&O network and help deliver execution of operational plans for GDO, including resource management, communication and engagement plans, capability planning, training requirements, and support delivery of functional budget and financial targets, as appropriate.

  • Understand the pulse of GDO staff across the functional pillar globally and incorporate their feedback and needs into operational plans.

  • Partner with the Functional VP to support leadership effectiveness, talent development & planning, and employee engagement initiatives across the function.

  • Contribute to high-impact initiatives of strategic importance to the business and execute emerging priorities and deliverables requested by the Functional VP.

  • Partner with the Functional VP and GDO SP&O to support implementation of organizational plans, engagement and communication strategies, business operations, executive dashboards, and presentations to internal and external stakeholders.

  • Partner with the Functional VP and GDO SP&O to support budget management, headcount planning, and resource prioritization activities.

  • Provide oversight for select business processes.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Doctorate degree and 2 years of experience in biopharma setting, OR
  • Master's degree and 4 years of experience in biopharma setting, OR
  • Bachelor's degree and 6 years of experience in biopharma setting
  • Associate’s degree and 10 years of experience in biopharma setting OR
  • High school diploma / GED and 12 years of in biopharma setting

Preferred Qualifications:

  • MBA, PhD, PharmD, or Master’s Degree
  • Work experience in life sciences or biopharmaceutical industry, preferably in clinical development.
  • Pharma/Biotech industry knowledge with focus on R&D.
  • Demonstrated expertise in transforming complex information into clear and concise messages for diverse audiences throughout the organization.
  • Excellent conceptual problem-solving skills with demonstrated ability to bring structure to vaguely defined problems, pragmatically scope problem-solving approaches, and manage execution.
  • Proficiency in data analysis to identify trends, present actionable insights, and define key performance indicators relevant to business objectives.
  • Excellent cross-functional communication skills and strong influencing skills with demonstrated ability to influence individuals with different working styles and at multiple levels of the organization.
  • Demonstrated organizational management experience and ability to work effectively across a matrixed organization.
  • Project management and project planning experience managing program results, budgets, and timelines.
  • Experience writing and presenting to senior executive audiences.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including listening and presentation skills.
  • Strong problem-solving, conceptual and strategic thinking skills with the ability to translate concepts into execution independently.
  • Track record of establishing positive relationships with colleagues at all levels.
  • Ability to effectively prioritize a diverse workload to meet deadlines and business needs.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional teams and influence without authority.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team while maintaining the highest level of confidentiality.
  • Ability to anticipate and resolve problems proactively.
  • Professional collaboration, leadership, and organizational effectiveness skills, including ability to support talent development and employee engagement initiatives within a matrixed organization.
  • Flexibility, adaptability, accountability, and ability to deal effectively with ambiguity.
  • Ability to make decisions and act with appropriate urgency in the absence of complete information.

The expected annual salary range for this role in the U.S. (excluding Puerto Rico) is posted. Actual salary will vary based on several factors including but not limited to, relevant skills, experience, and qualifications.
