Membrane Protein Biochemistry - Grad Intern

What You Will Do

Let’s do this. Let’s change the world. Amgen’s Discovery Protein Science (DPS) group is seeking an enthusiastic and collaborative Summer Intern to join our team in South San Francisco. DPS partners with research teams across the organization to shape drug-discovery strategies, produce key enabling proteins, and explore new therapeutic modalities. As a member of our group, you will work with cutting-edge technologies and contribute to efforts that support the development of life-changing medicines. If you’re eager to gain hands-on experience in biotechnology and make a meaningful impact on human health, we encourage you to apply.

In this internship, you will spend most of your time in the laboratory, using purification and analytical techniques to support the development of a novel membrane-protein production platform. We are looking for a detail-oriented student with a strong background in biochemistry and a passion for drug discovery. Key responsibilities include assisting in the optimization of protein expression and purification workflows, as well as performing quality assessments using chromatographic and biophysical methods. Additional responsibilities include:

  • Reviewing and summarizing project-related scientific literature
  • Designing, conducting, and troubleshooting experiments
  • Analyzing, interpreting, and presenting results to project teams and participating in scientific discussions
  • Documenting experimental procedures, observations, and results in electronic lab notebooks to ensure data integrity and reproducibility

Basic Qualifications:

Amgen requires that all individuals applying for a grad internship at Amgen must meet the following criteria:

  • 18 years or older
  • Graduated with a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
  • Currently enrolled in an MBA program for an MBA internship OR a Master’s program for a Master’s internship OR a PharmD program for a PharmD internship OR Ph.D. for a PhD internship from an accredited college or university and completion of the first year of MBA OR Master’s OR Pharm D OR Ph.D. program before the internship starts
  • Enrolled in an accredited college or university following the potential internship or co-op assignment
  • Must not be employed at the time the internship starts
  • Student must be located in the United States for the duration of the internship

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Degree concentration(s) in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Bioengineering, Biophysics, Cell Biology, or related fields
  • With minimum 1yr of laboratory experience
  • Demonstrated scientific analysis and problem-solving skills
  • Hands-on experience operating AKTA chromatography systems for protein purification
  • Broad training in protein analytical techniques (SDS-PAGE, HPLC, etc.)
  • Understanding of common strategies for protein expression and purification
  • Ability to collaborate effectively in a team-oriented environment
  • Effective verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills
  • Experience with purifying membrane proteins or performing biochemical experiments with lipid or detergent containing membrane proteins is a plus

The base pay range for this opportunity in the U.S. is $30-$40 per hour
