Senior Manager, Manufacturing Systems Engineering (ASRS)

What you will do

In this role, you will lead the engineering team responsible for the performance, reliability, and continued development of Amgen Ohio’s automated warehouse systems. You will manage engineers, system owners, and technicians supporting the Automated Storage and Retrieval System (ASRS), Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs), AutoStore, material handling equipment, warehouse control systems, and their interfaces with manufacturing lines and SAP Extended Warehouse Management (EWM).

This role operates within a dual-reporting model with AOH site Facilities & Engineering (F&E) leadership and Global Engineering Technical Authority (ETA), enabling strong site ownership while maintaining alignment with Amgen’s global automated warehouse engineering strategy, standards, and technical capabilities.

This is an engineering and operational leadership role responsible for both sustaining and advancing AOH’s automated warehouse capabilities. You will establish the technical support model for a 24/7 manufacturing site, lead the response to system issues that affect material flow, and build a team capable of sustaining safe, compliant, reliable, and resilient operations. Beyond day-to-day operational support, you will lead continuous improvement, lifecycle management, system integration, and engineering support for expansion of the automated warehouse as site and business needs evolve.

Team leadership and operational support

• Lead, coach, and develop a team of engineers, system owners, and technicians. Set clear accountabilities, technical priorities, training plans, and performance expectations.
• Establish support coverage, escalation paths, and recovery procedures for automated warehouse systems in a 24/7 operation.
• Direct technical response to equipment failures, interface errors, and material flow interruptions. Coordinate troubleshooting and restoration with Warehouse Operations, Manufacturing, Maintenance, Digital Technology, Quality, and equipment vendors.
• Review system availability, transaction performance, recurring faults, and recovery times. Use performance data to prioritize corrective actions and reliability improvements.
• Ensure that system owners maintain current procedures, technical documentation, spare parts strategies, preventive maintenance requirements, and vendor support plans.
• Partner with Warehouse Operations to ensure automated systems support inbound, outbound, and manufacturing material flows. Resolve technical constraints affecting those flows.

System ownership and compliance

• Provide engineering oversight for the end-to-end automated warehouse system, including ASRS equipment, conveyors, AGVs, AutoStore, warehouse control software, host interfaces, and connections to manufacturing and packaging lines.
• Define and maintain technical ownership across the team, including equipment, controls, software interfaces, and system performance.
• Lead or support investigations, root cause analysis, corrective actions, and change controls involving automated warehouse systems.
• Ensure changes to equipment, controls, software, and interfaces are assessed, documented, tested, and implemented in accordance with applicable site quality and safety requirements.
• Partner closely with Global ETA / ASRS technical leadership to maintain long-term system integrity, reliability, resilience, and alignment with enterprise engineering standards and strategies, including the assessment and implementation of lifecycle changes, technology upgrades, major system modifications, and new functionality.
• Partner with EHSS on equipment safety, access controls, risk assessments, and safe maintenance and recovery practices.
• Coordinate with Facilities Engineering on warehouse building systems and storage environments where their performance affects automated operations.

Startup, continuous improvement, expansion, and lifecycle planning

• Lead engineering support for the design, integration, commissioning, qualification, and operational readiness of new or modified automated warehouse capabilities.
• Ensure effective integration among the ASRS, AGVs, AutoStore, warehouse control systems, SAP EWM, and manufacturing/packaging lines, with clear testing and handoff to operations.
• Lead automated warehouse continuous improvement and engineering projects beyond routine operational support, including system optimization, capacity improvements, functionality enhancements, complex system integration, and business-driven expansion projects.
• Provide engineering oversight for automated warehouse expansion and modification projects to ensure engineering design quality, system integrity, and continued compliance with established technical requirements and standards.
• Develop team capability, procedures, and support arrangements before new systems enter routine operation.
• Own the technical improvement and lifecycle roadmap for automated warehouse systems, balancing immediate operational needs with long-term reliability, resilience, capacity, performance, and obsolescence risks.
• Support capital planning, equipment upgrades, technology refresh, vendor strategy, and expansion projects.
• Build effective working relationships with equipment manufacturers, system integrators, Global ETA, and internal partners.

Basic qualifications

• Doctorate degree and 2 years of engineering, automation, manufacturing systems, logistics, or related experience; or
• Master’s degree and 6 years of engineering, automation, manufacturing systems, logistics, or related experience; or
• Bachelor’s degree and 8 years of engineering, automation, manufacturing systems, logistics, or related experience; or
• Associate’s degree and 10 years of engineering, automation, manufacturing systems, logistics, or related experience; or
• High school diploma/GED and 12 years of engineering, automation, manufacturing systems, logistics, or related experience.

Preferred qualifications

• Experience leading engineers, technicians, or multidisciplinary technical teams in an operating manufacturing or distribution environment.
• Experience with ASRS, AGVs, AutoStore, conveyors, warehouse control systems, SAP EWM, or other automated material handling systems.
• Experience establishing technical support and escalation practices for continuous operations.
• Demonstrated ability to lead complex troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and sustained reliability improvements.
• Experience with commissioning, qualification, change control, and investigations in a regulated manufacturing environment.
• Demonstrated experience managing the lifecycle of complex automated systems, including continuous improvement, system upgrades, obsolescence management, expansion projects, and integration of new functionality.
• Experience providing engineering oversight for system modifications or expansion projects while maintaining design integrity, technical standards, and system reliability.
• Ability to define ownership and coordinate work across Operations, Engineering, Maintenance, Digital Technology, Quality, EHSS, Global Engineering/ETA, and external vendors.
• Strong skills in prioritization, decision-making, communication, and developing technical talent.
• Ability to balance urgent production needs with safe, compliant, reliable, and sustainable long-term solutions.

The expected annual salary range for this role in the U.S. (excluding Puerto Rico) is posted. Actual salary will vary based on several factors including but not limited to, relevant skills, experience, and qualifications.
