Executive Medical Director, US Medical Lead -Obesity & Related Conditions

What you will do

In this vital role as the Executive Medical Director, US Medical Lead - Obesity & Related Conditions, you will be accountable for the development and execution of the US Medical Affairs strategy for Amgen’s Obesity & Related Conditions portfolio, with primary responsibility for Chronic Weight Management (CWM) and Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) indications.

You will be grounded in a deep understanding of obesity, metabolic disease, related comorbidities, clinical practice, patient care pathways, and the US healthcare environment.

This leader will support accurate, balanced, evidence-based scientific exchange; address unmet medical needs; and provide strategic medical leadership across evidence generation, external medical engagement, medical education, scientific communications, insight generation, and lifecycle medical planning.

You will serve as an instrumental leader within Medical Affairs and a key cross-functional partner across Global Medical, Development, Regulatory, Safety, Value & Access, Legal/Compliance, Field Medical, Commercial, and other relevant functions, while maintaining Medical Affairs independence and ensuring activities remain scientifically appropriate, non-promotional, and compliant with applicable laws, regulations, guidance, and company policies.

This individual will bring deep expertise in metabolic diseases, including obesity and related conditions, and will help shape and execute US medical strategy in a complex, highly visible, and rapidly evolving therapeutic area.

This role will report into the Vice President, US Medical & Obesity Conditions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic medical leadership across medical launch readiness, evidence e generation, external medical engagement, scientific communications, field medical alignment, and lifecycle planning. The successful candidate will be expected to bring strong therapeutic expertise, executive-level leadership, and people-management capability

  • Contributing to product and portfolio strategy for Obesity & Related Conditions by providing medical and scientific input into launch readiness, lifecycle planning, evidence generation, and indication expansion priorities.

  • Developing and leading execution of US Medical Affairs strategy, including external medical engagement, scientific communication, evidence generation, medical education, medical insights, and congress strategy.

  • Serving as a close strategic partner to the Field Medical organization, including the National Leader for Field Medical, to align on medical strategy, scientific priorities, field medical resources, medical education needs, external expert engagement planning, and medical insight generation, while ensuring Field Medical activities remain independent, non-promotional, and compliant.

  • Collaborating cross-functionally with Commercial, Value & Access, Key Account Management, Legal/Compliance, Regulatory, and other relevant functions, while maintaining Medical Affairs independence and ensuring activities remain scientifically appropriate and compliant.

  • Developing and leading the US medical communication strategy, including clinical narrative framework, scientific platform, core medical content, congress materials, publications, field medical resources, and scientific exchange priorities.

  • Engaging US external stakeholders, including thought leaders, clinical experts, professional societies, payers, integrated delivery networks, accountable care organizations, and other relevant healthcare decision-makers, through appropriate, compliant scientific exchange to strengthen understanding of unmet need, disease burden, clinical evidence, and medical value.

  • Providing medical and scientific input, as appropriate, into evidence-generation, health economics and outcomes research, and payer-relevant scientific discussions to support accurate understanding of disease burden, unmet need, clinical evidence, and appropriate use.

  • Partnering with Global Medical Affairs and cross-functional partners to ensure US medical needs are represented in global strategy, evidence plans, publication plans, and lifecycle medical planning.

  • Leading medical insight generation and translating external medical, scientific, payer, and clinical practice insights into actionable recommendations for internal decision-making.

  • Supporting US medical launch readiness and lifecycle medical planning for CWM and OSA indications through integrated medical planning and cross-functional collaboration.

  • Ensuring all Medical Affairs activities are conducted in accordance with Amgen policies, US regulations, applicable guidance, and appropriate standards for scientific, regulatory, and promotional compliance.

  • Elevating Amgen’s reputation as a science-based, patient-focused, and reliable partner in obesity, metabolic disease, and related conditions.

  • Shape and execute integrated medical plans aligned with product, portfolio, and enterprise priorities.

  • Serve as a strategic partner to the Field Medical organization and the National Leader for Field Medical to ensure field medical activities are aligned with the overall US medical strategy.

  • Partner with Field Medical leadership to define scientific priorities, external medical engagement objectives, insight-generation needs, congress support, advisory board priorities, and medical education opportunities.

  • Work closely with customer-facing areas to ensure aligned, compliant, and medically appropriate engagement across key stakeholder groups.

  • Lead US external stakeholder strategy and engagement with experts in obesity, metabolic disease, sleep medicine, cardiometabolic disease, primary care, and relevant professional societies.

  • Serve as a senior medical voice in cross-functional forums supporting medical launch readiness, lifecycle planning, and access-related scientific discussions.

  • Lead, mentor, and develop Medical Affairs team members, fostering accountability, collaboration, inclusion, and high performance.

  • Knowledge of Good Clinical Practices, US regulations, industry codes, and compliance requirements relevant to Medical Affairs activities.

  • Strong understanding of pharmaceutical product development, product lifecycle, and commercialization processes, including Clinical Development, Commercial, Regulatory, Value & Access, Safety, Legal/Compliance, and Medical Affairs.

  • Experience developing medical communication strategy, scientific platforms, clinical narrative frameworks, congress plans, publication plans, and core medical content.

  • Experience translating medical insights and external stakeholder perspectives into actionable strategic recommendations.

  • History of solving complex problems while exercising strong judgment, scientific integrity, and a balanced understanding of business, clinical, regulatory, and patient considerations.

  • Demonstrated commitment to patient-centered decision-making, scientific excellence, and ethical leadership.

  • Experience collaborating with integrated delivery networks, accountable care organizations, payers, health systems, professional societies, and other healthcare decision-makers.

  • Experience developing or supporting digital channels and omnichannel scientific education strategies to enhance compliant medical education and scientific engagement.            

What we expect of you

Basic Qualifications:

  • Doctorate degree & 6 years of directly related experience OR

  • Master’s degree & 10 years of directly related experience OR

  • Bachelor’s degree & 12 years of directly related experience AND

  • 6 years of managerial experience directly managing people and/or leadership experience leading teams, projects, programs or directing the allocation of resources

Preferred Qualifications:

  • M.D., DO, Ph.D., or PharmD. from an accredited medical school, board certification or board eligibility in Endocrinology, Obesity Medicine, Internal Medicine, Pulmonology, Sleep Medicine, Cardiology, or another relevant specialty preferred.

  • 8 or more years of experience in the biopharmaceutical industry, including Medical Affairs, Clinical Development, Clinical Research, or related functions.

  • 5 or more years of Medical Affairs experience in the biopharmaceutical industry, ideally including US medical strategy, launch planning, evidence generation, and external stakeholder engagement.

  • Deep understanding of obesity, chronic weight management, obstructive sleep apnea, cardiometabolic disease, and related complications or comorbidities.

The expected annual salary range for this role in the U.S. (excluding Puerto Rico) is $325,302 - $440,114. Actual salary will vary based on several factors including, but not limited to, relevant skills, experience, and qualifications.
