ABOUT THE ROLE

Role Description:

The Senior ABAP Developer will play a critical role in Amgen’s S/4HANA transformation journey, driving the modernization and innovation of SAP applications using cutting-edge technologies such as ABAP on HANA, RAP (Restful ABAP Programming Model), CAP (Cloud Application Programming Model), and the SAP Business Technology Platform (BTP).

This individual will serve as a technical leader, architecting clean-core compliant solutions and guiding development teams to leverage SAP’s extensibility paradigms, ensuring sustainable, upgrade-friendly, and performant solutions. The role demands strong technical depth in OData, CDS, AMDP, and SAP Fiori/UI5, combined with the ability to mentor junior developers and champion DevOps, CI/CD, and quality engineering practices within SAP landscapes.

Roles & Responsibilities:

• Design, develop, and maintain complex ABAP objects (RICEFW) in SAP S/4HANA systems using modern frameworks and tools. Implement OData services, CDS Views, AMDP, and Fiori/UI5 applications to deliver scalable, high-performance business solutions. Apply RAP and CAP models for end-to-end service enablement, ensuring modular, reusable, and cloud-ready applications.

• Collaborate with architects and functional teams to translate business requirements into robust, extensible technical solutions.

• Ensure all development aligns with SAP Clean Core principles by decoupling custom code from the SAP digital core. Utilize SAP’s 3-tier extensibility model — in-app, key-user, and side-by-side — using SAP BTP and released APIs. Advocate for side-by-side extensibility through BTP and CAP, enabling flexible, upgrade-safe innovation.

• Lead technical remediation and custom code adaptation during the ECC to S/4HANA migration, ensuring compatibility, simplification, and optimization. Apply DevOps and continuous integration/delivery (CI/CD) practices using Git, Jenkins, gCTS, and abapGit.

• Implement ABAP Unit testing, ATC checks, and automated quality gates to uphold SAP development standards. Conduct code reviews, performance tuning, and troubleshooting to ensure maintainability and efficiency.

• Mentor and guide junior developers on RAP, CAP, and Clean Core practices. Establish coding guidelines, reusable assets, and technical accelerators to standardize development. Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams including architecture, integration, and functional domains to deliver end-to-end S/4HANA solutions.

• Explore and prototype AI-driven extensions using SAP AI Core, SAP AI Foundation, and SAP Joule to enhance business automation. Stay current with SAP’s evolving ecosystem — S/4HANA updates, BTP services, Fiori Elements, ABAP Cloud, and Steampunk innovations. Drive continuous improvement and automation initiatives leveraging SAP Build, SAP Business Application Studio, and BTP Dev tools.

Basic Qualifications and Experience

• Doctorate degree OR

• Master’s degree in computer science or STEM majors and 4 to 6 years of IT or related field experience OR

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science or STEM majors and 6 to 8 years of IT or related field experience OR

• Diploma in computer science or STEM majors and 10 to 12 years of IT or related field experience

Must-Have Skills:

• Extensive knowledge of ABAP Objects, ABAP Development Tools (ADT) in Eclipse, CDS views, and OData services.

• Practical experience with RAP and CAP models, leveraging SAP BTP.

• Expertise in using SAP ATC and other SAP quality and security tools for code inspection, optimization, and vulnerability detection.

• Proficiency in designing and developing SAP Fiori applications using SAP UI5, OData services, CDS views, and AWS SDK integration.

• Requirement gathering, technical analysis, estimation, design, driving SAP S/4HANA implementations, upgrades and migration projects.

Good-to-Have Skills:

• Experience with Agile/Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) for SAP-specific development projects, ensuring efficient delivery of ABAP enhancements and customizations in an iterative, collaborative environment.

• Proficiency in ABAP DevOps practices, including setting up CI/CD pipelines for ABAP code deployment, automated testing with ABAP Unit, and code quality checks using SAP ATC.

• Understanding of SAP Clean Code principles, with hands-on experience in writing modular, maintainable ABAP code that follows best practices for readability, reusability, and minimal technical debt.

• Experience with SAP Workflow and Business Rules Framework, enabling custom workflow development and process automation within SAP environments using ABAP.

• Familiarity with ABAP Cloud Development, including side-by-side extensions using SAP BTP and knowledge of integrating ABAP with modern cloud platforms through APIs and OData services.

Professional Certifications (please mention if the certification is preferred or mandatory for the role):

• SAP Certified Development Specialist – ABAP for SAP HANA 2.0 (preferred)

• SAP Certified Development Specialist – SAP Fiori Application Development (preferred)

• SAP Certified Application Associate – SAP S/4HANA, ABAP Programming (preferred)

Soft Skills:

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills for effectively collaborating with functional teams, gathering business requirements, and documenting technical specifications and solutions in a clear and concise manner.

• High attention to detail in writing, debugging, and maintaining ABAP code, ensuring adherence to best practices, clean core principles, and compliance with SAP development standards.

• Ability to adapt to evolving SAP technologies and project requirements, staying up to date with the latest advancements like RAP, CAP, and SAP Fiori while meeting dynamic business needs in a fast-paced environment.

• Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to troubleshoot issues in complex SAP systems, identify root causes, and provide effective technical solutions that align with business processes.

• Collaborative mindset, working closely with cross-functional teams, SAP consultants, and stakeholders to ensure the successful delivery of custom ABAP solutions that meet organizational goals.
