What You Will Do
Amgen is establishing a Computational Biology team at AIN Hyderabad to scale translational and reverse translational analysis across clinical programs in Oncology, Inflammation, Rare Disease, Cardiovascular & Metabolic, and Obesity & Related Diseases. The Director, Computational Biology will be accountable for building, leading, and maturing the Hyderabad Computational Biology organization as an integrated extension of the Global Computational Biology function in Precision Medicine, with responsibility for scientific quality, delivery excellence, leadership development, culture, and cross-functional influence.
This leader must bring strong executive presence, polished communication, deep knowledge of drug development and translational analytics, and the judgment to represent the team and Amgen brand with credibility in senior forums.
The position will report into US-based Precision Medicine Computational Biology leadership and will partner closely with global leaders across Precision Medicine, Clinical Development, Biostatistics, Biomarker Sciences, Data Engineering, Digital/Technology, and therapeutic area teams. The Director is expected to operate as a trusted enterprise partner, not only a functional manager.
This leader will create and run an integrated site model that is fully integrated with the global organization and with the following sub-functions:
- Data Engineering (via a Tech Lead): Ingestion, ETL, QC, data product development, metadata stewardship, and scalable pipelines for GxP clinical biomarker, omics, and imaging data in an integrated, AI-ready, regulated F.A.I.R. data and metadata environment with near-future agentic integration.
- Bioinformatics & Bioinformatics AI Engineering (via a Tech Lead): High-throughput cloud-based workflows for genomics, epigenomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, multi-omics including spatial, modern ML/AI including foundation models and agentic patterns, and emerging assay modalities. Bioinformatics processing of data generated using a broad range of assay platforms and technologies.
- Computational Biology Data Science: Predictive modeling, deep learning, translational analytics stacks, cross-study learning, generative AI enablement, and agentic infrastructure that supports the Precision Medicine data and analysis platform.
- Biomarker Analysis Scientists: Program-facing translational analyses supporting assets across therapeutic areas, including assessment of target engagement, time-series pharmacodynamic modeling, mechanism-of-action inference, patient stratification, indication expansion, and evidence generation for development decisions.
Key Responsibilities
Site, capability, and culture build-out
- Stand up, scale, and mature the AIN Hyderabad Computational Biology organization, including hiring strategy, role calibration, onboarding, performance expectations, operating rhythms, delivery standards, and talent development.
- Build a cohesive, high-trust team culture grounded in scientific rigor, humility, accountability, adaptability, inclusion, and speed-to-learning.
- Recruit and retain exceptional talent while maintaining a high bar for executive communication, scientific judgment, ownership, and collaboration.
- Establish clear module ownership, delivery standards, and interfaces across Hyderabad and global teams; rapidly iterate as responsibilities mature.
- Coach managers, technical leads, and senior individual contributors to raise the quality of leadership, problem framing, stakeholder management, and written/oral communication across the site.
- Collaborate and coordinate continuously with the Global Computational Biology organization within Precision Medicine, maintaining regular touchpoints with management and key stakeholders.
Scientific, translational, and drug development leadership
- Provide Director-level scientific leadership for translational and reverse-translational analytics across clinical trials, including biomarker interpretation, patient stratification hypotheses, mechanism-of-action support, pharmacodynamic evidence, benefit-risk context, and evidence-generation plans.
- Ensure analyses are anchored in drug development realities including clinical endpoints, trial design, patient populations, assay limitations, operational feasibility, decision timing, quality, traceability, and auditability.
- Guide Biomarker Analysis Scientists in study design, analysis strategy, interpretation, and communication of results for governance, program teams, and senior decision forums.
- Translate complex multi-modal results into clear development implications, distinguishing evidence, uncertainty, limitations, and recommended next steps.
- Drive cross-asset learning and portfolio-level synthesis through principled data mining, visualization, knowledge discovery, and integration of internal and external evidence.
Data, technology, and responsible AI leadership
- Own site-level delivery for high-quality, analysis-ready data products including omics, biomarkers, and imaging, with QC frameworks, scalable workflow execution, and reproducible analytical outputs.
- Partner with platform, information systems, security, legal, privacy, and governance stakeholders to ensure robust, compliant, and secure development and deployment of analytics and AI solutions.
- Drive modernization of analytics using advanced ML/AI, including foundation models and agentic workflows, with responsible AI practices including validation, monitoring, documentation, and controls.
- Set expectations for code quality, reproducibility, data provenance, documentation, model evaluation, and review-ready deliverables across all Hyderabad Computational Biology work products.
- Create an operating model that converts AI and platform capabilities into measurable scientific productivity, quality, and decision impact rather than disconnected technical experimentation.
Stakeholder management, executive communication, and enterprise influence
- Serve as the senior Hyderabad representative for Computational Biology and Translational Analytics in global forums, governance discussions, program reviews, and capability strategy conversations.
- Demonstrate exceptional executive presence, polish, and judgment when communicating with senior leaders, clinicians, biologists, statisticians, data/technology partners, and external collaborators.
- Operate as a trusted leader with cross-functional stakeholders across Global Development and Precision Medicine; proactively seek context and bridge gaps across time zones and teams.
- Communicate with clarity and executive presence; translate complex analytics into actionable insights, including uncertainty, limitations, and decision implications.
- Represent the team and Amgen brand with credibility, professionalism, and maturity, including in recruiting, onboarding, governance, cross-site engagement, and external scientific interactions when appropriate.
- Anticipate stakeholder needs, manage ambiguity, resolve conflict constructively, and create alignment without relying on positional authority.
Basic Qualifications
We are seeking a leader who brings the following minimum qualifications:
- Advanced degree required; PhD strongly preferred in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Engineering, Data Science, or a related quantitative or biomedical discipline.
- 18+ years of progressive experience in biopharma, biotech, healthcare, or a closely related environment delivering translational bioinformatics, computational biology, biomarker analytics, or precision medicine capabilities in the context of drug development.
- 15+ years of people leadership experience, including hiring, performance management, coaching, succession planning, leadership development, and building multi-disciplinary teams.
- Demonstrated experience leading leaders, senior technical experts, or multi-layered scientific/technical teams.
- Demonstrated experience supporting clinical trial translational analytics including biomarkers, patient stratification, multi-omics integration, imaging/derived phenotypes, or related areas.
- Deep working knowledge of drug development from early clinical development through late-stage evidence generation, including how translational analytics informs program strategy and decisions.
- Proven track record delivering in a highly matrixed global organization with significant time-zone separation.
- Superior written and verbal English communication skills, including executive-ready materials, scientific storytelling, senior stakeholder engagement, and the ability to represent an organizational brand with polish and credibility.
- Flexibility and adaptability to operate across global time zones.
Preferred Qualifications
The ideal candidate will also have many of the following:
- Demonstrated ability to stand up a new site or scale a capability center in India or a similar global hub, including operating model design, talent strategy, and culture formation.
- Experience creating a cohesive, high-performance team culture across newly hired teams, matrixed partners, and global stakeholders.
- Deep familiarity with multi-omics at scale, for example single-cell and bulk transcriptomics, proteomics, epigenomics, spatial omics, fragmentomics, and biomarker development practices.
- Strong understanding of data engineering patterns for regulated and GxP-compliant R&D environments including metadata standards, provenance, reproducibility, audit trails, QC gates, and validated pipelines.
- Proven experience designing and deploying ML/AI solutions in production for biomedical applications, including foundation models/LLMs and agentic workflow patterns.
- Experience with responsible AI governance in an R&D context including evaluation, monitoring, documentation, privacy/security controls, and change management.
- Comfort working with modern compute ecosystems including cloud and/or HPC, containerization, workflow orchestration, and collaborative software engineering practices.
- Recognized ability to influence senior stakeholders, shape strategy, build followership, and drive decisions under ambiguity.
- Evidence of scientific credibility through high-impact program contributions, publications, regulatory/governance-facing work, platform delivery, or recognized thought leadership in translational analytics.
