Amgen focuses on areas of high unmet medical need and leverages its biologics manufacturing expertise to strive for solutions that improve health outcomes and dramatically improve people’s lives. A biotechnology pioneer since 1980, Amgen has grown to be one of the world’s leading independent biotechnology companies, has reached millions of patients around the world and is developing a pipeline of medicines with breakaway potential.
We have a presence in approximately 100 countries and regions worldwide and our innovative medicines have reached millions of people in the fight against serious illnesses. We focus on six therapeutic areas: cardiovascular disease, oncology, bone health, neuroscience, nephrology and inflammation. Our medicines typically address diseases for which there are limited treatment options, or they are medicines that provide a viable option to what is otherwise available.
Amgen Europe was established in 1989 – followed by the Swiss affiliate shortly afterwards in 2002. Today, more than 300 employees are working for Amgen in Switzerland.
NextGen office concept to foster Innovation and Flexibility
Thus far, six offices in Europe have converted to NextGen spaces and Switzerland is now one of them. Since July 23rd 2018, the European Hub and Swiss Affiliate launched into full operation from their new location in Rotkreuz.
The open space concept fosters an environment that promotes engagement among employees, encourages cross-functional collaboration, and allows people and their ideas to flow more freely. The design invites movement and choice to suit employees’ needs throughout the day, thus offers different types of spaces: scrum-style tables for teamwork, piazzas for quick team meetings, focus rooms for quiet work and social hubs for interacting. Equipped with state-of-the-art technology, there are plenty of opportunities to help shape innovative solutions as a team.
Switzerland’s new space is located at the newly developing Suurstoffi area of Rotkreuz in one of the country’s first-ever wooden high rises. The European Hub is on the 6th, 7th and 8th floors; the Swiss Affiliate is on the 9th. A lovely terrace is accessible from the 6th and 7th floors.
Great Place to Work
This year for the first time ever, Amgen’s Swiss Affiliate participated in the Great Place to Work® (GPTW) awards. Its efforts resulted in a seventh-place overall win, and a first-place win among biopharma firms in Switzerland with 50-249 employees.
“We are very proud to be awarded the best biopharma company in our category,” says General Manager Henrik Asmussen. “This motivates us to become an even better place to work next year by engaging our employees on addressing the issues where we can improve.”
The Swiss Affiliate is the fifth Amgen office in Europe to be recognized as a GPTW in 2018. This award is especially meaningful as it is primarily driven by the judgement of our own employees, whose opinion makes up the largest portion of the overall rating.
“It’s our people who make the difference, and in the end create an engaging and motivating work environment,” says Head of Human Resources Maggie Hirsiger, listing cross-functional collaboration, passion, pride, license to innovate and most importantly, serving patients as key contributors to the winning atmosphere.
