Undergrad Co-op – R&D (Biochemical Characterization and Novel Screening)
Canada – Burnaby
Amgen British Columbia specializes in the discovery and development of human therapeutic antibodies. The research center, located in Burnaby, employs approximately 60 people including research scientists and a small support staff. A biotechnology pioneer since 1980, Amgen was one of the first companies to realize the promise of biologic therapeutics and has changed the practice of medicine, helping millions of people around the world in the fight against cancer, kidney disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and other serious illnesses. With a deep and broad pipeline of potential new medicines, Amgen remains committed to advancing science to dramatically improve people’s lives.
The successful co-op student will be part of a biochemical screening team responsible for the characterization of lead monoclonal antibody panels against diverse targets. The core function of the team is to design fit for purpose secondary screens (e.g. affinity, epitope, receptor/ligand) to enable selection of antibody molecules with properties that meet program design goals. The antibody panels are generated through the immunization of Xenomouse™, which is a proprietary transgenic mouse capable of producing fully human antibodies. The accomplished co-op student will assist with development of novel assays to further characterize lead antibody panels, and will be responsible for an individual research project.
