The Therapeutic Discovery organization is seeking a highly motivated and capable Associate Scientist to join the Bioassay & Profiling group within the Discovery Technologies department in Cambridge, MA. The successful candidate will be a bench scientist that contributes hands-on to our assay development efforts in support of Amgen’s small molecule drug discovery pipeline in collaboration with multiple therapeutic areas. The position focuses on the development & optimization of novel in vitro biochemical and cell-based assays and ensures successful transfer of these assays & associated protocols to other groups to support HTS and SAR studies for promising therapeutic targets. Specifically, this individual will design and execute laboratory experiments, generate & interpret data supporting the development of new assays, and test the biological effects of therapeutic agents.

Other responsibilities will encompass an ability to learn, apply, and incorporate automation solutions to assay development operations in the lab, assay troubleshooting, mechanism of action and modes of inhibition analysis, data analysis, and reporting. The candidate will investigate, identify, develop, and optimize new methods/techniques to generate reliable and reproducible data promptly. The individual will need to readily adapt to changing project needs, semi-independently plan and execute experiments and develop sophisticated problem-identification & problem-solving skills.

The successful candidate will maintain fluency with the latest scientific literature and rationale surrounding drug targets and be an active contributor to the interpretation of results in group discussions. Excellent teamwork and communication skills are expected as this role requires an ability to work closely with other scientists in the group and across Amgen. Adherence to good laboratory conduct, documentation practices, and safety guidelines is essential.

Basic Qualifications

Master’s degree and 2 years of scientific experience


Bachelor’s degree and 4 years of scientific experience

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s Degree or Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, Biochemistry, Pharmacology, Enzymology or related field with 2+ years of prior experience in a drug discovery laboratory setting working as part of a multi-disciplinary team

A flexible mindset, with strong interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills

Successfully demonstrated initiative, teamwork, collaboration, an ability to multi-task and a passion for developing extensive assay development technical expertise

Ability to create and establish priorities, manage work plans, and meet timelines

Capacity to identify, evaluate, implement, and become proficient in novel laboratory techniques

Demonstrated application of cell culture, including primary cell culture, and experience with phenotypic and functional characterization of cells

Familiarity with standard RNA/DNA and protein analysis techniques

Established capability to design, conduct, optimize and execute on novel biochemical and cell-based assay development efforts in the lab supporting HTS and SAR studies for promising novel therapeutic targets on time

Strong scientific foundation in the understanding and implementation of a wide range of biochemical and cell-based assays and readouts (e.g., TR-FRET, HTRF, BRET, PCA, AlphaScreen, Fluorescence Polarization, High Content imaging, Luminescence & Fluorescence-based reporter &/or label-free assays)

Broad experience and expertise in molecular reagent & cell line handling as well as development and implementation of novel cell target engagement, functional or high content assays (e.g., second messenger generation, ion flux, reporter, NanoBit/BRET, gene activation, cellular imaging)

Experience in developing biochemical assays (e.g., assessing enzymatic activity & kinetics, molecular interactions, protein modifications) &/or biophysical techniques & approaches (e.g., SPR, ITC, TSA, etc.)

Experience in setting-up & operation of fluorescence/luminescence plate readers (e.g., FLIPR, EnVision) and automated liquid handlers (e.g., Bravo, Echo, Tempest) in the development of 384- &/or 1536-well microtiter plate assays

Familiarity with software and statistical platforms for the analysis of large datasets (e.g., Screener, Spotfire, MODDE pro/DoE, Pipeline Pilot)
